...this last group is tricky. It doesn't really look alot like any math with which you are familiar. The purpose is to challenge yourself to apply some of the concepts expressed in the box on page 7 to these unfamiliar operations (the circle around the "plus" sign and the star). Questions 19-20 foreshadow important concepts in Linear Algebra. Question 17 foreshadows a critical idea in Linear Algebra and the field of mathematics called Abstract Algebra; A mind-blowing branch of mathematics that often makes startling (and useful...sometimes) connections between seemingly unrelated mathematical results.9/10/08 page 11, Self Test I. For these exercises, try to focus on finding your weaknesses. The purpose of these problems is to identify which concepts you need help with. I don't expect you to do problems that you find to be easy in this set. Focus on what you find challenging.
Also, look through the vocabulary list at the top of the page and make sure that you understand what each word means.9/12/08 Chapter Test (in the book at the end of the chapter).
9/15/08 I'm hoping to have this test for this chapter pretty soon, so, as a class, go over the homework together and compare your solutions. When finished with this, study the vocabulary from the chapter and generally study for the test and don't worry; we'll have a day of review together before the test.
