“This kind of work is where we want to go in our district
.” ~Kevin M. Lyons, Ed.D., “I’ve loved this work. It’s so important. Many thanks!” ~QPA Cohort Teacher BQPAI is an “assessment initiative that impacts teacher skill, which is such an important factor in student learning” ~BQPAI Cohort Teacher
How have Cohort teachers changed aspects of their practice as a result of their QPA-related work?
“I have made more time to clarify assessment criteria at the beginning of unit instruction.” “I developed assessment tools for supporting students showing their learning in ways other than writing alone.”
“We have more clearly – as a humanities department – defined what we teach and what we expect of students.” What types of assessments are Cohort teachers doing now?
“The students read a memoir set during WWII and focused on the lives of young people brought to England on the Kindertransport to escape persecution/death in the Holocaust. Instead of giving a final written exam, I developed an assessment in which students designed a memorial to those children and others they represented. The students were amazed that this was their “test,”(but) the criteria to be met did assess the elements of the memoir that were important to assess. Also, the assessment itself showed respect for the memoir’s content and its author.”
“I have developed an online portfolio process for my classes at the end of the year. I am excited to see their products.”
“Our school has moved towards common assessments and habits of learning assessments that we will be using to help our students get ready for their junior year project.”
