Common Performance Assessments

Why Use Performance Assessments?

Why use performance assessments?
There are several reasons why educators should use performance assessments to guide and inform instruction. Unlike traditional fixed response assessments such as multiple choice or fill-in-the-blank questions, performance assessments:
  • provide students with more ways to show what they know and can do
  • allow students with different learning styles more opportunity to succeed
  • engage students more deeply in their own learning and interests
  • provide opportunities for learning through the assessment process
  • are more closely aligned with real world skills that students will need, such as public speaking

Quality performance assessments are critical for improved and equitable student learning

Performance assessments challenge students and teachers to engage and demonstrate higher order thinking and 21st century skills that traditional standardized tests are unable to assess. When performance assessments are aligned with quality instruction and curriculum, they have the potential to improve and equalize the opportunity to learn for all students.
