Power Standards

Language Arts Power Standards-Power Standards are the top 10-15 standards we want our students to know on the last day of school.

 

6th Grade

 

1.       A student leaving 6th grade will use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words.

2.       A student leaving 6th grade will show growth in their independent reading level.

3.       A student leaving 6th grade will write in complete sentences including beginning capitalization, end punctuation, and express a complete thought.

4.       A student leaving 6th grade will identify and explain literary elements of fiction and nonfiction.

5.       A student leaving 6th grade will use the media center to access, analyze, organized gathered information.

6.       A student leaving 6th grade will organize a 5-8 sentence paragraph with a clear topic sentence, body sentences and closing clincher sentence.

7.       A student leaving 6th grade will independently apply all steps of the writing process.

8.       A student leaving 6th grade will write a friendly letter with heading, salutation, body, closing, and signature.

9.       A student leaving 6th grade will read a selection and write a properly developed response.

10.   A student leaving 6th grade will identify the eight parts of speech, and their functions in a sentence.

11.   A student leaving 6th grade will correctly punctuate written work across the curriculum.

12.   A student leaving 6th grade will recognize poetry terms such as stanza, verse, rhyme, meter, or rhythm, alliteration, onomatopoeia, haiku, and a limerick.

 

7th Grade

 

1.)    A student leaving 7th grade will construct clear paragraphs (with a minimum of 5 sentences) that include a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a strong clincher.

2.)    A student leaving 7th grade will understand the four step writing process and its application.

3.)    A student leaving 7th grade will construct compound and complex sentences.

4.)    A student leaving 7th grade will use transitional expressions.

5.)    A student leaving 7th grade will compose a three paragraph essay including an introduction, a body, and a closing.

6.)    A student leaving 7th grade will use and apply reading strategies to verify meaning of words in context (context clues, restatement, word origin, inferences, or predicting).

7.)    A student leaving 7th grade will complete a research project including taking notes and crediting a source.

8.)    A student leaving 7th grade will identify literary elements of plot, character, setting, theme, and conflict.

9.)    A student leaving 7th grade will identify vocabulary based on root words, prefixes, and suffixes.

10.)                        A student leaving 7th grade will read fluently expository and narrative text and differentiate between the two.

11.)                        A student leaving 7th grade will have an understanding of semi-colon and comma usage.

12.)                        A student leaving 7th grade will identify the complements.

13.)                        A student leaving 7th grade will be able support thesis or topic sentence with adequate details, description, examples, and figurative language.

14.)                        A student leaving 7th grade will identify examples of the 8 parts of speech.

15.)  A student leaving 7th grade will identify poetry and prose and construct an original poem.


 

8th Grade

 

1.)    A student leaving 8th grade will expand vocabulary through word study, literature, and class discussion (lexicon).

2.)    A student leaving 8th grade will make inferences and draw conclusions from text.

3.)    A student leaving 8th grade will analyze literary terms as they appear within the story (protagonist, antagonist, setting, conflict, plot, theme, climax, point of view, direct and indirect characterization, mood, flashback, and foreshadowing).

4.)    A student leaving 8th grade will analyze figurative language terms in poetry (simile, metaphor, alliteration, personification, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, symbol, and rhyme).

5.)    A student leaving 8th grade will use and identify commas rules – items in a series, separation of adjectives, complete sentences, direct address, introductory word, introductory phrase, appositive, side remark, address and date.

6.)    A student leaving 8th grade will write with sentence variety – simple, compound, and complex.

7.)    A student leaving 8th grade will use and understand correct pronoun-antecedent agreement.

8.)    A student leaving 8th grade will recognize purpose for writing and apply strategies for writing an introduction – literary based and expository based.

9.)    A student leaving 8th grade will expand main body paragraphs layered with supporting details.

10.)                        A student leaving 8th grade will appropriately use MLA style documentation.

11.)                        A student leaving 8th grade will write effective concluding paragraphs by learning the steps to summarizing.

12.)                        A student leaving 8th grade will utilize research and library skills.

13.)                        A student leaving 8th grade will apply identify and write in a variety of styles:  descriptive, persuasive, expository, research, and informative.

 

9th Grade

1.      A student leaving 9th grade will apply prefixes, suffixes, and root words to determine meaning and vocabulary in context of various texts.

2.      A student leaving 9th grade will read & understand grade level material across the curriculum.

3.      A student leaving 9th grade will apply all 12 comprehension strategies (Finding word meaning, drawing conclusions and making inferences, distinguishing between fact & opinion, understanding sequencing, recognizing cause and effects, finding main idea, comparing and contrasting, interpreting figurative language, recalling facts and details, making predictions, identifying author’s purpose, and summarizing) to grade level materials across the curriculum.

10th Grade

 

1.)    A student leaving 10th grade will use and apply the elements to analyze the genres of short stories, novels, and drama.

2.)    A student leaving 10th grade will identify the tone and recognize how the author’s word choice conveys his/her tone.

3.)    A student leaving 10th grade will draw inferences from a text.

4.)    A student leaving 10th grade will analyze the characteristics of subgenres such as satire, sonnet, epic, myths, and legends.

5.)    A student leaving 10th grade will evaluate the significance of various literary devise and techniques, including imagery and tone.

6.)    A student leaving 10th grade will write for different purposes and audiences adjusting tone, style, and voice where needed.

7.)    A student leaving 10th grade will address essay topic and provide support in a clear and concise manner.

8.)    A student leaving 10th grade will write essays with a clear thesis and organizational patterns with sentence variety.

9.)    A student leaving 10th grade will recognize and avoid sentence fragments and run ons as well as use active voice and agreement.

10.)A student leaving 10th grade will appropriately use MLA style documentation.

11.)A student leaving 10th grade will effectively use a variety of resources and summarize, paraphrase, and/or quote information appropriately.

11th Grade

2.)    A student leaving 11th grade will identify structure, formats, and devices of the reading selections to expand comprehension.

3.)    A student leaving 11th grade will use strategies such as not taking, outlining, summarizing, and using study guides to better understanding.

4.)    A student leaving 11th grade will use inference and analysis skills.

5.)    A student leaving 11th grade will expand knowledge of the characteristics of genres and sub-genres.

6.)    A student leaving 11th grade will use his/her knowledge of historically and culturally significant pieces of American literature.

3.)    A student leaving 12th grade will be able write analytical essays using appropriate literary terms and concepts while drawing inferences from a text.

4.)    A student leaving 12th grade will read and comprehend difficult prose and poetical material and evaluate author’s arguments and positions.

5.)    A student leaving 12th grade will respond to the reading material through various materials such as discussion, multimedia projects, journals, free style, and formal essays.

6.)    A student leaving 12th grade will write a research paper reflecting knowledge from a variety of credible sources, which are properly documented according to MLA style.

7.)    A student leaving 12th grade will understand the structure of the English language and its complexities.

8.)    A student leaving 12th grade will synthesize information from other sources within his/her writing.

9.)    A student leaving 12th grade will demonstrate appropriate grammar usage in speaking and writing.
