Partners in Local Ministry

Blacksburg Presbyterian Church seeks to partner with local organizations as we minister together in the local community.  The following are some of the organizations we have joined with to date.
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of New River Valley.  This is the area chapter of the national organization, founded in 1906.  It provides educational programs, character development, life skills and recreation opportunities to middle school children.

  • Children’s Dental Program.   Administered by the Christiansburg Presbyterian Church, this program pays for dental work for children under 10 not covered by insurance and whose families cannot afford it.

  • Free Clinic of the New River Valley.  Provides and makes possible medical and dental care to persons up to 130% of the poverty line without insurance who live in Montgomery and surrounding counties.  Over 3,000 patients served per year.

  • Interfaith Food Pantry.  Provides nonperishable food to poor families in Blacksburg and surrounding area.  Approximately 200 families receive one allocation per month.  Ten churches participate.

  • Mental Health Association of the New River Valley.  Mental health treatment provided to persons who cannot afford it through a Pro Bono Counseling Program.  Also undertakes programs of community education, prevention and advocacy.

  • Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program.  Through New River Community Action, emergency food, clothing and furniture are given to low income county residents, plus money for rent, utilities and fuel (some from BPC’s Men of the Church wood cutting).

  • NRV CARES.  Conducts two programs in the New River Valley, CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) and a Child Abuse Prevention Education activity that includes courses on effective parenting.

  • New River Community Action Clothing Bank.  Vouchers are given to poor families for the purchase of back-to-school clothing for their children.  Donated clothing collected behind old town hall is resold in Blacksburg Clothing Shop for additional income.

  • New River Family Shelter.  Temporary shelter is provided to nearly 200 homeless individuals and families a year.  Numerous churches and organizations participate, some by providing living space.

  • Volunteer Emergency Families for Children.  Based in Richmond, this organization recruits, trains and supports volunteers who provide short-term shelter and mentoring for abused, neglected, runaway, homeless and at-risk children and youth.

  • Valley Interfaith Child Care Center.  Operates child care centers in Christiansburg and Blacksburg for low-income working families in the New River Valley.  BPC was a prime mover in its creation and several other churches are involved.

  • Women’s Resource Center of the New River Valley.  In existence for 21 years, this organization provides housing, safety, counseling and advocacy for adult and child victims of domestic and sexual violence.
