Museums, Stately Home Tours, and other Fun

The City, in addition to its many restored Victorian Homes in the City's Historic Residence Quarter, has quite a few other offerings not to be passed up..

Spend a little time in the several galleries and complete building, trains, and more.  These may be found being carefully maintained by the West Augusta Historical Society.  There is a school house location within reasonable walking distance from the Bowers Mansion, but ample parking is also available, along with complete accessibility.

A separate building is the Soceity's Round Barn, which will require a five minute drive, but should not be missed.  The Docent at the Museum will be happy to give you driving directions and any other information you might need.   The requested donations to tour these museums is very modest.  All proceeds are used to continually improve and maintain both the buildings and their collections.

Throughout the City, many Victorian Homes are tastefully decorated with antiques and collectibles. Spend a little time in the several town gift shops where you may find that special something you've always "needed". Allow a little extra time for browsing Country Prim & Folksy, as it is a full service gift shop offering bridal registry and gift certificates.  For the antique lover, both memories and treasures can be collected from a large selection of items at the eclectic store adjacent to our town Florist.  On the other side of the florist is the Red Dot Gift Shop.   Opposite the Red Dot on Main Street is Mannington's Fine Jewelry store, all nearby the Bowers House.

Also nearby in Fairmont is a must-see antiques, collectables, and gourmet gift emporium, Located on Route 19 S of 250, the Showalter House at 235 Locust Avenue in Fairmont. The House is now home to the Tin Man Gallery, Castaway Yarn Shop, and more, nestled in with some of Fairmont finest Victorian Homes.   You might also wish to visit the Rider Gift Shop and Pharmacy for seasonal gifts, antiques, and any sundries you might need.  It is located 'across the Million Dollar Bridge' within one block of your left turn immediately after crossing the bridge.

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in nearby Weston WV (some 20 minutes south via I-79)    Preparing for its 2010 Witches Ball and Haunted House Tours.
WESTON -- Officials say the haunted house begins October 1 in the Tuberculosis building, which has never been open to the public before.
They say it involves all four floors of the building, including the basement.

The haunted house will run for the entire month of October, and visitors will be able to meet the man who played "Leatherface" in the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" October 8 through the 11th.

They say no matter what night you come, it will be a scary experience!

"Lots of blood, lots of shocks. It takes about 70 people to put all this stuff together so you're gonna be seeing people everywhere you go and you're going to be freaked out," says Rebecca Jordan Gleason, operations manager for the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum.

TALA says it is still looking for more actors and makeup artists for the haunted houses. If you can help, give them a call at (304) 269-5070.
