Botanical partnerships

The start

September 2008
Hello, I'm Marcus Ragus and I'm employed as a teacher with the Institute of TAFE Tasmania.

This site provides a personal account of my experiences during my placement with the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens (RTBG), Hobart, as part of a 'Return to industry' project involving TAFE Tasmania and the Gardens.

The project is aimed at increasing my level of 'currency'within my industry field which is a periodic requirement of being a vocational education teacher. Doing this at the RTBG aligns well with my specialst discipline which happens to be rural studies such as horticulture and conservation, land management.

A fundamental aspect of my placement is to contribute something back to the RTBG through a range of iniatives including the development of innovative technology based interpretation models that focus on smart tag technology and situated learning. These will be developed in collaboration with the staff during my stay at the RTBG and will encompass staff development activities such as video production and resource design.

First days
Starting in the last weeks of September and into October 2008, the first two days have been a period of settling in and getting around to as many of the staff at the RTBG as possible. This has also been a very busy period for staff at the
Gardens as it is the time for the Spring Tulip Festival that is held each year in October, with thousands of people attending from all over Australia and the world.

Friday Oct 10
The first staff PD session begins today with an introduction to the technology and a demonstration of a portable solution for the delivery of interpretation resources READ MORE
