Equate: The Equation Thinking Game
Have fun creating equations crossword-style. Equate is a great math board game for family and classroom. Earn higher scores using division or fraction tiles and landing on premium board positions. For 2 to 4 players or teams. Many levels of play for ages
84% (7) Equate looks a bit like Scrabble--for aspiring mathematicians, that is. Designed by a real mathematician, it works like this: You put down tiles on a board and make points by correctly completing simple equations. Your nine tiles include both numbers and mathematical symbols; you can add on to previous plays both vertically and horizontally. Learn simple stuff (like what division is) and more sophisticated ideas (like the order of precedence among arithmetic operations). It all adds up. --Richard Farr On the "inverted similitude" Antipodal Resonator as Inverted Simulator. I have three days to turn that one picture into five pages, each as full of meaning as that image. I have just hit a conceptual roadblock: The problem is not A = A??, but A =?? B. Is the antipodal conception still valid? Or are those the same thing... FINAL ESSAY: Tyler Casey Callich Dr. Richard Adams ENGL 2343 TuTh 11:00 PM Essay 12/17/08 Antipodal Simulation: A Marriage of Unwed Polarities Herman Melville's formulation of two seeming opposites into unity illustrates one fundamental way in which difference fuels symbolic thought. His most striking example of this concept is found in "The Paradise of Bachelors and the Tartarus of Maids," wherein very disparate locations arrest his mental processes. It is his desire to equate and differentiate simultaneously which makes his emotion difficult to comprehend. Within this system, the arrived-at phrase, "inverted similitude," is the narrator's attempt to understand his emotional equation of Tartarus with Paradise (214). As such, the binary presentation of the text asks for comparison between the two locations. It is their inexplicable similarity that forces the narrator to note the "partial inadequacy," which enhances "the vividness" of the connection (213). The disparity between the two locations broaches the manner in which metaphor and simile function on a psychological level. Simile is the linkage of two traditionally or logically separate entities. On a literal level, simile does not make sense, but on the level of concept it clarifies the essence of the subject. It is this correspondence below the level of words, an area not based in attributes, but essences, that is necessary for metaphoric expression to function. For, if the two concepts were intimately related on the basis of characteristic, simile and metaphor would not be symbolic, but denotative language. Such denotative redundancy can be seen in the terrible simile, "The dog walked like a quadruped." Melville's work takes the symbolic conjunction further, wherein a forced, qualitative opposition is contorted into an essential apposition. In Melville's narrative the bachelors and maids enact a similar essence independently, one which is ensconced in a heterogeneity and inversion of characteristics. It is the homogeneity of essence, which is related to, but not dependent on, attributes, which, as above stated, fuels metaphoric representation. It isn't the two locations’ shared homosocial nature, or their opposition within an economic or sexual binary that drives their similarity. This is apparent from the circumstance in which the narrator initially arrives at his simile, when he is traversing the geography on his way to the paper mill, prior to any contact with any of its laborers or inner machinations. The seeming lack of correspondence between the two locations strikes the narrator much more forcefully than any complete, lucid relationship. The problem for the reader begins here, where the allusive simile creates the need for an elusive explanation. Whereas one could craft a laundry list of commonalities between the two groups, it would not fully answer for their correlation. The reason for this is their requirement for one another for reference, in their status as polar opposites in the text. This lack of similarity, but positional sameness, is best described in geographic terms. Antipodes are two points exactly opposite on the surface of globe. Such an alignment evokes the concept of complete inversion, e.g., heads pointing in opposite directions, seasonal and temporal separation, and hemispherical inversion. This turning inward, toward a coessential core, is different from the surface level differentiation, which does not assign a shared essence to opposing entities. Keeping with the geographic concept of antipodes, I shall first consider the two locations' relationship with the rest of the world, in terms of coalescence and isolation. Next, I shall broach the manner in which Melville creates each atmosphere and how this relates to the concept of internal and external difference. The basis of Melville's comparison is rooted in place, thus, it follows that a survey of his creation of each place might approach an aspect of his "inverted similitude." The seedsman’s very question, “But where are the gay bachelors?” elicits pursuit of the sense of place communicated by the narrative and an explanation of what exactly “where” can mean (214). For, the narrator knows very well where the bachelors are in a traditional geographic sense: they are across the Atlantic, in London. However, their lack in Tartarus encourages this search, in which one finds clues only through that very lack. Thus, the qualities which contribute to the ascription of “Paradise” or “Tartarus” are tangentially linked to the contours of psychological space. Tartarus is located in a chilly, isolated part of New England. Day 127 - People equate sexy with promiscuous. They think that because I'm shaped this way, I must be scandalous - like running around and bringing men into my home. But it's just the opposite.
(I'm going to write in present tense, okay?) UGH! I JUST DELETED EVERYTHING I WROTE! DAMNIT! Anyway, so today I had karate. So I had to wake up early and my father gave me a ride. But, I forgot my gi pants, so Shihan let me borrow some >.< This is why I love him, haha. Anyway, during weapons, we were doing line drills with our highest weapons (mine are nunchaku), and when I went to do one, I swung the weapon down too far and it smacked into my ankle. It made a sickening sound when it connected and it hurt so bad. I wanted to cry. I looked at Shihan and he was just cringing. I tried to laugh, and I said; "It happens." I couldn't put weight on it for about 5-6 minutes. When I got home, it was all swollen and bruised. But after the class, I stayed with Shihan and another guy from class, talking about the upcoming METALLICA CONCERT! Then Shihan gave me a ride home. My little sister was gone and so was my older one, so it was just me and my father. So he took me out to a nice restaurant and we had dinner together, just talking and eating. It's never just us. We talked about life and such. I told him about DV, boys, school, karate, teaching, etc. It was a nice night. "Suppose I say I'm never satisfied Suppose I say he cuts the roots To make the tree survive Just let me kill you for a while Just let me kill you for a smile Just let me kill you once I'm oh so bored to death Oh, I hunger I hunger I eat Born into attitude Asleep at the wheel Throw all your bullets in the fire And run like hell why cure the fever? What ever happened to sweat? Suppose I say The vultures smile at me Suppose I say I set them down They plan to pick you clean And satisfaction this way comes (2x) And satisfaction's here and gone Gone, yeah, and gone again Oh, I hunger (2x) I eat Born into attitude Asleep at the wheel Throw all your bullets in the fire And stand there..." Extra Strength Headache Relief is a combination pain reliever that contains acetaminophen, aspirin and therapeutically active caffeine. Doctors call the enhanced pain relieving effect provided by products that contain caffeine in combination with acetaminophen and aspirin "caffeine adjuvancy". And doctors believe that these non-prescription combination pain-relief products offer major advantages for headache sufferers. Many doctors recommend a non-prescription combination pain reliever like Headache Relief as an alternative before prescription medications. Interestingly, caffeine is also an ingredient in many of the most frequently used prescription headache medications. In independent studies of patients with tension-type headache, the combination of acetaminophen, aspirin and therapeutically active caffeine was shown to provide superior pain relief over acetaminophen alone. In three clinical studies, 94% of patients needed only one dose of Extra Strength Headache Relief to relieve tension-type headache pain.
