Coyote

I went to Yellowstone to shoot elk, and I did, but this unexpected encounter in the middle of an unusually hot day for YNP turned out my favorite shot of the entire trip. This moment was one of the very few times in an hour that this coyote looked directly at me. I was sitting on the ground a little behind some sagebush and she walked straight toward me. She got pretty close before she noticed me...at which point she stopped, gave me the amazing look, then changed course slightly to avoid me and slowly continued on her way. I’m not sure of the distance here, but this was shot at 185mm. It felt very close. I had switched to the rented Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II as she got closer to me. The lens is wicked sharp and renders the world beautifully. The color, contrast and detail of this lens is amazing for a zoom. Oddly enough, I’m just now realizing how few “keepers” I have using this lens. This is the first shot I’ve posted using it. I think this is because I felt more comfortable with my trusty 400 and went with it when I felt I really wanted to nail the shot.
