As we forge a path toward greater alignment and collaboration, technology is sure to play a key role in bringing us together to advance a common agenda. BOSTONavigator (www.bostonavigator.org) is one such tool. Developed in partnership with BOSTnet and the City of Boston, BOSTONavigator is an online, searchable database of more than 1,000 of Boston’s out-of-school time programs.

Since its launch in 2007, the field has taken advantage of BOSTONavigator as a resource as evidenced by an increase of almost 60% in program opportunities listed in the database.

Following are snapshots of out-of-school opportunities available to Boston youth, as currently represented in BOSTONavigator. These charts are a mere sampling of the analysis that is possible with information in the database. With more than 600 organizations and over 1,400 program opportunities, it is clear that Boston is a city full of opportunity for young people.

According to the programs listed in BOSTONavigator, activities with a Sports & Recreation focus are the most common across all neighborhoods while Arts & Culture activities make up the smallest percentage of available opportunities in most neighborhoods.

Activities with a Sports & Recreation focus are the most common across every age grouping. As children get older, the percentage of opportunities with an Arts & Culture, Leadership, or Environmental focus increases while opportunities that focus on Academic Support decrease.
