Villager He Yiju has already got a washing machine in anticipation, as her house is shortly to be supplied with water on tap under an American Red Cross-supported project. At the moment, she has to climb a nearby hill to get water. She carries a bucket up to the top of the hill every three days and takes water from a stagnant pool at the top by sucking it out of a pipe. No matter what the weather, even in the freezing winter snow and over icy ground, she has to carry her clothes up to the pool to wash them and carry water back down for drinking and washing. He Yi Ju says that having running water will make her life much easier. Once it is connected she hopes to be able to use the washing machine outside her house. At the moment, all she can use it for is drying clothes she has already washed by hand. There are seven people in her family, although usually she lives alone, including her son (a driver) and her daughter (who owns a small shop in a nearby town). She also has two grandkids.
