my valve clearance
my valve clearance
There is a larger clearance at the point when the other valve is fully open. Adjusting the exhaust valve clearance to 0.25mm (Japanese spec.) when inlet valve is fully open, makes the bike less noisy and gives the right power. Pretty close to 0.20 at top dead center. Turning the engine a little clamps the gauge and you can be sure that the clearance is the one intended. Easy to do on 6th gear, move the bike a little back and forth, and find the place where the gap is widest. Which ever clearance you want to have, the gauge must not move too easily even when the gap right. If not done carefully, the clearance can be much more than intended. Turning the engine a little, makes the clearance to degrease to about 0.21mm, but that is how it goes. So most of the time the clearance is about 0.21mm even when it has been adjusted to 0.25 mm at maximum. At the Top Dead Center the clearance is 0.21mm. I prefer this tighter setting. Less back kicks, less noise. Makes me really wonder why there are two different specifications for the clearance. Is it because the two ways to measure? Because American noise regulation? But there are many other countries with tight noice regulations. Bike is now overhauled. Tomorrow I'll try if I can get it approved for another 2 years:-) That is called shaken in Japan. (P.S. I GOT IT, easy thing :-)
