Programs and Procedures
The Reading program in our multiage 1st and 2nd grade room, is a balanced literacy program which includes read-a-loud, silent or independent reading, shared reading, structured reading groups, and reading at home. The reading skills we work on include the development of reading strategies to become good readers which involves using visual, structural, and meaning cues, phonemic awareness skills, word attack skills, accuracy, fluency, comprehension and the love of reading!
In addition to Reading, our Language Arts program also includes Writing, Spelling and Penmanship. Small writing groups are teacher directed and include mini lessons on writing skills and various forms of writing. We will learn the writing process, which includes webbing (or brainstorming a topic or idea), writing (first draft), editing, publishing.
Our Math program also works with developmentally appropriate groups. We meet on a daily basis, using a combination of manipulatives, games, activities and practice of skills in order to achieve mathematical understanding and competency. Problem solving is an important part of our program as well. Each child has a math portfolio, which will continue with them each year.
Our Spelling program, Fundations, will focus on learning chunks of words to spell larger words, and learning how to spell high frequency words.
