Winter Planting

Cold weather has taken over the Bonny Doon Garden world, but despite the dramatic drop in temperatures, our late fall planting is thriving! I think the winter crop winner out in the Bonny Doon Garden is the Kale. This cold snap didn't seem to bother the Kale crop at all. Our Kholrabi is also thriving as is the Cauliflower. Lettuce and Broccoli can tolerate a tremendous amount of cold weather, but I'd recommend a frost cloth—just in case we continue to have sustained low temperatures. Our Carrot and Beet seedlings are also just starting to sprout. All of these plants can survive our tough winters—as long as you have enough sun!

We also planted some more beds with soil 'fixers' (Fava Bean and Red Clover) to add nutrients to the soil. We talked about cover crops in this months "Dirt World" entry. Check it out!

Potatoes! We cut up about 7 potatoes and the students planted 20 'eyes.' Potatoes, we learned, are sensitive to cold, so we might need to cover these with frost cloth if the temperature drops low once they sprout.

We also placed our Strawberry plants in the refrigerator to insure a good crop. Please see our January 7 Life Lab Report for more information.
