Microsoft Steals Again! Mozilla Joins in on the thievery!

posted Oct 29, 2010 11:50 AM by John Haag

Surprise surprise, Google comes up with a brilliant idea for a browser and OS with perfect integration, Microsoft can't have that.  Meet Internet Explorer 9.
Hm... tabs at the top.  Google's idea, we showed a screenshot of Firefox 4 which did the same thing.  Now, on IE 9 you can create application shortcuts and pin apps.  Hm.  Sound like what Google did 3 years ago?  Also, remember 3 years ago how Google released a feature similar to Windows Snap?  Did you know that Google Chrome released that before Windows Snap was even thought about?  Also, check out the new tab page in the screenshot above.  Nearly identical to Chrome's.  Google always makes the best stuff first and no one else can come up with their own stuff so they steal.
Now, more on Firefox 4.  They just announced a web store like the Chrome web store.  What is the deal.  Why can't people quit stealing from Google?  If I was Google I'd be furious.  It's time for everyone to drop Internet explorer and Firefox and to go Google with Chrome.  As soon as I can I'm getting Chrome OS to replace Windows 7.  Here is the funny part too.  IE9 and Firefox 4 are still really unsecure and they crash all the time.  I tested betas for both and they are just as bad if not worse than Firefox 3 and IE 8.  Google Chrome still runs perfect though even on the Developer channel of Chrome 8.

Another Google Service Bites the Dust

posted Oct 13, 2010 10:53 AM by John Haag

Google has once again announced the death of one of their services.  Goog411 is disappearing in November.
Here is there closing notice copied directly from Google.com/goog411:

Back in 2007 we launched 1-800-GOOG-411, a voice-powered directory assistance service that connects you quickly to businesses across the U.S. and Canada. On November 12, 2010, we will shut down the service.

GOOG-411 was the first speech recognition service from Google and helped provide a foundation for more ambitious services now available on smartphones, such as:

  • Voice Search - search Google by speaking instead of typing.
  • Voice Input - fill in any text field on Android by speaking instead of typing.
  • Voice Actions - control your Android phone with voice commands. For example, you can call any business quickly and easily just by saying its name.

Our success encouraged us to aim for more innovation. Thus, we’re putting all of our resources into speech-enabling the next generation of Google products and services across a multitude of languages.

If you don’t use a smartphone, and you’re trying to call a business, you can send a text message with the name and location of the business to 466453 ("GOOGLE") and we’ll text you the information, or on Gmail you can use the new phone-calling featuresto call any U.S. business free of charge. Also, if you don’t have the free voice search app pre-installed on your phone, you can download it here.

Thanks for all the calls, and keep an eye out for all the innovation to come.

The GOOG-411 Team

Google drops great services every year so, should you be worried about your favorites?  Yes and No.  Google will not generally kill a service without creating a new one with similar features.  So, Android, Chrome, and Chrome OS should be safe.  However, look for Orkut, Earth, & Picasa to possibly die.  I kinda think even Wave will be in trouble.  Why exactly?  Because there are other services similar to these that are more popular.  If you still want to get a busiess without data you can use Google SMS.  Visit www.google.com/sms for more information.

Mozilla Chrome

I decided to test out the new Firefox 4 that is the big hype right now.  It's blown way out of proportion.  All it is is a super slow version of Google Chrome.  I'm not impressed.  The look is obviously nicer because Google has always had the most attractive and artistic web browser in Chrome, however, the big Firefox button that pushes the tabs down looks retarded. Line it up with the tabs.  There is an obvious reason that Google has always made the best software and this just shows it.

Google Docs 2010

posted Apr 14, 2010 8:53 AM by John Haag

Google has been working on a new version of Docs which will basically push it from being a side application to Microsoft Office to it's own fully featured office suite that will be powerful enough that even office professionals won't need any other software.  They've added in many great new features such as tab stops, a ruler bar, a stand alone drawings editor that works kinda like paint and publisher mixed together, and much more.  Google is pulling out it's big guns now probably with the release of Google Chrome OS and Google Chrome 5.0 on the horizon.  We are really impressed with the new editors, but the one issue is that once they release offline support will be gone temporarily.  These new editors don't work with Gears very well for this purpose so Google has decided to phase them out and replace the offline with some HTML5 components that will hopefully be ready for use soon.

Google --- The Video Game

posted Apr 7, 2010 12:06 PM by John Haag

Nintendo announced today that it is partnering with Google to make the first ever Google Video game exclusively for the Nintendo Wii.
So, how can you have a Google Video Game???  That is the big question.  As Nintendo describes it users will in one version of the game, players compete by correctly predicting the most popular web search terms, and the word with the most hits wins.  Another version involves players using special items and stats.  The other two versions of the game incorporate mechanisms like collapsing stairs and fizzing booms.  The game also has the ability to play offline with about 10,000 pre-stored words and phrases.  If a user goes online then they will be able to download additional challenges based off current Google search trends.  This actually seems like a creative idea.  It's more of a casual game than a hard core one.  However, the MSRP is $52.  Which is the same as the top games Smash Bros. Brawl and Call of Duty:  Modern Warfare 2.  I don't really feel that a game about searching should be quite that expensive.  Actually a $15 Wii Ware would've sufficed.  Who knows maybe it's better than it sounds.  After all Google has never disappointed us with any of their products yet.

Farewell XP and Vista

posted Apr 7, 2010 8:30 AM by John Haag

Microsoft has announced today that Windows XP SP 2 and older as well as Windows Vista with no Service Packs will receive no more updates by Mid-July.

Through the success of Windows 7 Microsoft is trying to make the push to have it running on every pc in America, even if it means dropping XP and Vista.  Vista was bashed pretty harshly for its many problems, which Microsoft claims Windows 7 fixes.  For the most part this is correct, I’m a supporter of Windows 7 which I never planned on owning another Windows Machine after having my Vista.  So, if you are on XP or Vista, you need to do a Windows Update to the newest service pack asap or you will lose out on many security features.

Boncoh Browser Database

posted Mar 25, 2010 2:04 PM by John Haag

Today we decided to unveil our new project known as the Browser Database.  We are working to find every known web browser in order to make finding the perfect browser for you more simple.  Many people have different needs when it comes to their browsers so, we are working to help narrow down your choice.  Many people don't even know that there is more than just the default browser for their OS available.  So, using this we feel will give Browser makers a more fair chance at getting their browser in the running as a competitor in the browser wars.
