Feedback:

"Engaging and innovative"
Randy Pitman, Video Librarian

“These films make the study of society and the media relevant to students by speaking to their everyday experiences and inspires them to speak as well -- guaranteed to spark lively classroom conversations.”
-Astra Taylor, Department of Sociology
SUNY New Paltz

“Revealing, sensitive, and yes, funny, Wet Dreams and False Images is a wonderful deconstruction of the construction of desire. I strongly recommend it as a teaching tool for both academic and community environments.”
-Stephen Duncombe, Media and Cultural Studies
New York University

“A candid look at a normal, seductive, and disturbingly unreal part of our visual culture.”
-Leon Dunkley, Ph.D., Director, Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture
Duke University

"Epstein's quirky, quietly radical film shows consciousness being raised right on camera...A riveting examination of how retouching has enforced an utterly unrealizable standard of female beauty, even at street level."
-Kate Stables, Guardian Newspapers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BODY TYPED is a series of short documentary films about body image, media literacy, and cultural identity -- that will be combined to make a feature film.

About the film project:
I'm not interested in telling people that it is wrong to try to look beautiful, or to strive to be fit. But, I do mean to reveal, explore, and uncover how advertising is creating impossible standards which no-one is able to live up to in real life; and expectations that if we hold on to, can prevent us from being truly happy in the body we live in.

Virginia Woolf wrote, “It is far harder to kill a phantom than a reality.” I believe that body image issues are public and mental health issues, and I hope that my filmmaking will contribute to “killing a phantom.”
