Sliderule Resources

 
There are a number of ways to obtain slide rules, the main being hunting through antique or  street markets or the modern equivalent of this, the ebay. At any time there is usually approximately 400 slide rules for sale on the ebay, the quality can vary from very poor to very good, so buyer beware!.

There are a couple of more "normal" ways to obtain slide rule and the following describes two of these.

Slide Rule Sellers

There are a number of sellers of slide rules, the following are three that I have used and can personally recommend,

The Slide Rule Universe ( not only a seller of rules but a site with a lot of information) http://www.sphere.bc.ca/test/sruniverse.html


Peter Holland ( mainly German rules) http://www.peterholland.de/

You will probably pay a little more from these sellers for slide rules BUT you will get a very good and clean example that reinforces the old axiom "you get what you pay for"

Slide Rule Manufacturers

You may think that in the 21st century, 40 years after the introduction of the personal calculator that all makers of slide rules have vanished from the face of the earth. Not so there is still at least one company still producing slide rules.

Surprisingly this manufacturer of slide rules is in Japan, Concise http://www.concise.co.jp/eng0731/slide.html

Concise make circular slide rules and sell them at a reasonable price.

 
 
 

 

Slide Rule Museum

Mike Konsank, a fellow collector, has developed a website titled the International Slide Rule Museum. this site is a Non-Profit commercial-free Virtual Internet-Museum dedicated to the Students and Engineers of the Past and Those Still Present.
It offers a number of resources and other information for people interested in these devices.
It also offers a sliderule loan program. If you are an educator wishing to give your students a hands-on experience and instruction with actual slide rules in order to introduce the importance of logarithms, the museum is able to supply quantities of up to 25 matching slide rules for temporary use, free of charge, courtesy of several collectors. I supply the Australian region with 20 rules for loan under this program.

Slide Rule Books

A number of sites on the web have books that can be purchased or downloaded. The Slide Rule museum ( link above) has many files that can be downloaded. Another source is Greg's Slide Rules which can be reached at the following link.


Greg has a number of resource documents that can be downloaded.

I have a number of books ( 27 at last count ) on slide rules that I have collected over the years and although I have not scanned the books and made them down loadable(yet!) the following link will take you to a database where all the books I have collected are listed.
