William Oughtred invented the slide rule in the 17th Century and it "ruled" the engineering and other disciplines for three centuries until the 1970's when Hewlett Packard produced the HP35. Then, quicker than the demise of the dinosaurs, slide rules disappeared from the engineers tools of choice. A sad end for an instrument that assisted engineers and designers in the greatest technological achievements of the human race.
