A Klawun No. 1001/S This slide rule was evidently used in commercial applications as it has scales for percentage and currency. It is of German manufacture and included a Nestler name imprinted in the Well. Other printing notations on the instrument are "Fienmessinstitut KLAWUN Hannover in the well and "Der Rechenstab des Kaufmanns, System Klawun" on the stator. These translate as "Fine
measuring institute KLAWUN Hanover" and "The
slide rule of the buyer, system Klawun" I suspect the translations mean a commercial institute called Klawan in Hanover and it is a slide rule for the commercial trader of the system Klawun. Interestingly the currency scales on this rule are in pounds, shillings and pence i.e. the British monetary system but this rule is of German manufacture and was obtained form a German trader. This is a slide rule called the "Holophane Illumination Calculator" This rule was made by Blundell of Luton England and was obtained in Tasmania. I assume Holophane indicates that this rule was made to specification for the Lighting Company of the same name. It was used for the calculation of light intensity at a distance from the source. The back of the rule provides an indication of the method of calculation. But this requires further investigation. |
