TONY WARD
Braunston based, I am a qualified experienced passenger boat skipper and for 8 years until 2009, was a Licensed Boatmaster, examined and licensed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. My very early retirement allowed me to indulge my life-long passion for England's canals and I qualified for my Boatmaster's licence. For the next 3 years I steered 72 feet passenger boats for the busy London Waterbus service between Camden Lock, London Zoo and Little Venice. It was such a wonderful job I might even have done it for nothing - but I didn't tell them that! Since moving to Braunston I have skippered The 'Duke of Bridgewater' trip boat in Leicester and 'The Coventrian' on the Coventry Canal for several seasons. I have captained the hotel narrowboat 'Katie' for Away4awhile and steered public trip boats at the Crick Boat Show. I am often to be seen at Braunston Marina where I work part-time; assisting them with their brokerage business, helping to organise the annual Historic Boat Rally and steering brokerage boats around the system. Using my extensive experience to help novices and improvers become capable steerers is very satisfying to me and, whilst treating boat handling tuition with the seriousness it requires, I find my informal, 'laid back' and friendly approach (or so I am told!) has led to many of my clients remaining firm boating friends.
