Boat Handling Programme This is the full programme covered (subject to individual need) during a whole-day session which typically will last for about 8 hours. A half-day session will normally cover the same but in far less depth with the accent being on deck work, boat handling and safety. important nautical terms ropes & fenders, useful knots coiling & throwing lines securing boat to bollards, rings & stakes listing & trim steering correct use of speed effects of "interaction" & transverse thrust turning coping with wind tying up & letting go using crew running aground operation of locks use of lines in locks safety precautions lock etiquette general care checks before start-up & whilst running understanding of gauges battery care simple periodic checks types & operation of bridges & tunnels deck & below deck safety equipment ventilation fire hazards & use of extinguishers storage of gas & petrol stern gland, weed hatch & other hull fittings and their watertight integrity anchor work avoidance of personal risks of injury 'man overboard' procedure and risk from shock life jackets & buoyancy aids hazards to & from children & pets knowledge of route bylaws, local & national regulations for safe practice including: - International Regulations for Prevention of Collision at Sea signs & signals priorities canal etiquette environmental protection
