Kerry from “Better Earth” spoke about their vision to get as many people as possible to use household products that have little or no effects to the broader environment. The better earth products are bio-degradable, contain only harmless chemicals and are certainly better for the earth than the more conventional cleaners. And they work well too, proven on many dinner parties. For more information go to http://www.betterearth.co.za/. Also they have on their website a list of places to recycle.

Peter Oebell from Novelty Business Concepts, told us that about how his company has hired people who lost their jobs in the textile industry to make durable and easily transportable shopping bags, and anoraks. Contact him to purchase these and never use a plastic bag again. Email him at noveltybc@gmail.com.

We were also requested to add our own list of places to recycle, and more importantly what is recycled there to our website. So send us your list, and we will consolidate and publish it on our website www.bnwc.co.za

Also Tanielle requested that we invite all of the attendees and none attendees to a launch of Forgetmeknot. Creations from cast-offs launching on the 11th July at 3 Kingfisher close, Kenrock Estate Houtbay, 19:00. Forgetmeknot will showcase the works of Tanielle Bell which have been inspired by discarded materials being turned into works of art. RSVP Cathy Bell 082 578 1784. Take a look at her website www.forgetmeknot.co.za

I hope this summary finds you well and going greener, we hope to have another meeting in October. Initially theme is How to green your business, if you have a topic you can talk on along this line drop us a line.

The HOTBOX uses the principle of insulated cooking. If you can keep the heat that is used to cook food, no replacement heat is necessary to complete the cooking process. This kind of cooking is healthier, tastier, frees up your time, saves you money AND it allows you, as an individual, to make a significant contribution to the ensuing global effort to halt and reverse the rapid depletion of our resources.

The meeting was an interesting discovery of some important facts.

  • We started with Pat talking about the emissions each of our foods we eat produce, by growing, producing and delivery, and how we can take some of this back by reducing or removing beef from our diet. She also spoke about the inhuman conditions that the non-free range animals have to live in. Pat also had some great pumpkins for sale that anyone can purchase at R12.00 each at Soil for life
  • Then Ian spoke about Grey water, how you can use your water from you bath, washing machine and basins then adding a bio degrader, it cleans the water so that it can be reused to water you garden, thereby saving the water in the earth. You can read more on their website Biological-Grey-Water-System
  • Thérèse spoke about Earth hour the global phenomenon, where we all just take time out from the power grid – A summary is below
  • Kirsti Meyer from Green Home displayed here fully compostable range of packaging. All their packaging you can add to your composter and 30 days later it is helping he earth

Earth Hour

What is Earth hour?

Governments and communities and public authorities in more than 750 cities have already committed to turning off their lights for one hour at 8.30pm on 28 March in a graphic show of support for decisive action on climate change.

Earth Hour
In 2009, Earth Hour aims to reach out to 1 billion people in 1,000 cities.

The list of cities confirming their participation in Earth Hour 2009 includes 37 national capitals and some of the great cities of the world, including Paris, London, Beijing, Rome, Moscow, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, Hong Kong, Dubai, Singapore, Athens, Buenos Aires, Toronto, Sydney, Mexico City, Istanbul, Copenhagen, Manila, Las Vegas, Brussels, Cape Town and Helsinki.

The WWF-sponsored event continues to show amazing momentum, from being a Sydney, Australia awareness-raising event in 2007. As participation for Earth Hour 2009 storms past this level of municipal involvement in more than twice the number of countries, discussions are under way or nearing completion in hundreds of other cities.

Who Is taking part?

Archbishop Desmond Tutu is the global patron of Earth Hour 2009. But we’ve been gratified by the number of celebrities who’ve joined up: Ryk Neethling, the Moroka Swallows, Deon Meyer, Freshlyground, the Parlotones, Marc Lottering, Freshly Ground, Soli Philander and many others.

What will it acheive?

Earth Hour 2009 forms part of a global mass action on climate change, and the WWF aims to secure the participation of 1 billion citizens globally. These names will be presented to the United Nations Climate Changes conference in Copenhagen at the end of the year. The goal of the Copenhagen meeting is to agree on a new global climate deal to replace the Kyoto Protocol which expires in 2012. Earth Hour is a show of support for action on climate change and more specifically for a fair, effective and science-based global deal to be negotiated by world leaders at this conference.

How the community get involved?

First off we need people to pledge their support online at www.earthhour.org.za That we will be able to quantify the number of people who are standing together against climate change. The greater that number, the more impact it will have on world leader’s ahead of the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference in December.

Secondly we need people to spread the message. Earth Hour is bigger than turning off lights. It’s about standing together on an issue of global concern.

Finally, on the 28th of March at 20:30, turn off your lights.

A Short Sumarry 5 Feb Meeting

posted Feb 10, 2009 6:12 AM by Business Network with a Conscience   [ updated Feb 24, 2009 12:18 AM ]

Inner Beauty Means Outer Beauty - Alison Porter

What's so special about being beautiful and what does it mean to be whole?

Beauty draws us near because it rises from love, love is the most nourishing and desired force in life. When we love ourselves, a mysterious array of chemicals and emotions align, making us physically balanced, even radiant.

Being whole is finding the balance in the spiritual, emotional, physical and mental aspects of ourselves. When we take care of the internal and external aspects of ourselves we become more whole, which in turn reflects back into our environment - this leads to the harmony and peace we are all ultimately striving for.

And from the Talented - Dawn Pilatowicz www.seagull.co.za

Talent Exchange:

The only sustainable monetary system around that will allow us to continue
living while the fiat money systems crash. People will still be here even
if there is no money, so we create our own local money.

Transition Towns:

We can sit back and say 'what are they going to do about it' when we think
of lack of oil, energy, money, food. Who are 'they'? We are. It is up to
us to take responsibility and do our bit towards peak oil and climate change. On the 28/03 is Earth Hour again. www.earthhour.org.za

Green Tips for the month

  • Pat  - Burry a Two litre bottle top up in a flower bed / veg garden, after poking holes in it three up four "sides". Fill bottle once a week with water, this feed a bed of 2 metres wide
  • Learn to precycle - When buying look under the packaging, see if there is a triangle of arrows. You local recycler can tell you what they can recycle in Cape Town 5 & 6 is not recyclabel
  • Most important when printing try use a greener option like we said below. It is amazing that all you need to ask, and it is normally no more expensive.

Remember it On the 28/03 is Earth Hour again. www.earthhour.org.za

Summary of Business Network with a Conscience October 2008

posted Jan 21, 2009 8:19 AM by Business Network with a Conscience

It is important to take fact and act on it to prevent the preventable. Our summary of our networking event may help you turn facts into actions:

David Wolstenholme discussed concerns that the world is feeding itself by taking advantage of Africa. He listed a number of factors that are affecting our continent, specifically the demands being placed on it from Asia. You can contact him for more details and statistics at david.at.specialised.com. The good news is that there are an increasing number of South African businesses that are natural and organic. 160 of them will be exhibiting at the go organic show at CTICC October 17 to 19. For more information go to www.naturalandorganic.co.za

David also mentioned that should you be getting pamphlets printed on glossy paper, there is a green option called Mega Art Matt.

Andy, a representative from SAFeAGE www.safeage.org only had enough time to ask for signatures on their petition to ensure that all GM foods are compulsorily labelled.

Peter Oebell, introduced a remarkable reusable shopping bag that you can attach to your key ring. We have had very positive feedback from this ingenious product. Contact him for where to purchase noveltybc.at.gmail.com or 021 939 9326

Our main new green leaf tip this month was to vote with you rand and your feet. Before purchasing anything ask if there is a greener product.

Thanks to the following gift providers:

  • Peter for the reusable shopping bags, 5x1 bag pack, 1x3 bag pack
  •  Tanya for her gift of her book on love
