Local Insight:  Three Mile Open-cut

From the viewing site one can see the various geological layers that formed during the Cretaceous period. Opencutting in the 1980's exposed levels where the earlier underground miners dug 70ft below the gravelly surface, hoping the next strike of the pick would reveal a burst of rainbow colours in the candle light ... a patch of precious black opal.

Local Insight: Beautiful Bimble Box leaves

Amongst 'The Ridge's diverse and  interesting vegetation is the Bimble Box, known also as Poplar Box. The leaves are shiny and rounded to reflect the sun and so retain the moisture. They are sometimes found bearing the scars of the stone axes used to remove oval shaped pieces of bark for aboriginal coolamons. Honey from the small white flowers is a pale amber colour and of good quality.

Local Insight: Our rusty old heritage treasure

Sleeping lazily among the moonscape of the opal fields are the relics of bygone days when everything from car doors to a scrap of corrugated iron was a treasure. Even now opal miners  still have a flair for inventiveness and resourcefulness.
