Blackout Girl: Growing Up and Drying Out in America
"Where the hell am I? How did I get here?" Beginning at the age of 12, Jennifer Storm asked herself these questions many times after waking from alcohol-induced blackouts. During her teens and early twenties, Storm turned to alcohol to deal with the traumas in her life. In addition to alcohol, she also experimented with drugs, and eventually began using crack to deal with the deep black hole of sadness, loss, and unworthiness that she felt inside herself. That is, until she awoke in a hospital psych ward and saw bandages on her wrists. "The doctor came in and said I was a very lucky girl to be alive," she explains, "and for the first time in my life, I believed it." She agreed to transfer to a rehabilitation center, though she wondered how life would be without alcohol and drugs. "Even as I asked myself this question, I quietly just knew I would never need them again. That inherent knowledge gave me a greater sense of peace than I had ever felt before. It was intoxicating in a whole new way." Grease is the Word. So, I went into the bathroom to pin up my hair & paint on my eyes, meanwhile, my young stud ran off to his room & shut his door... Ok, fine, I think to myself... he'll be content pulling out his books & toys, keeping himself busy for 5 minutes rather than being under foot, in our master bath which contains an endless array of fun wonders for a curious little mind: an eyelash curler, contact lenses, toilet paper, lotions, soap, jewelry, hairspray, hair bows, a blow dryer, the shower, closet, dirty clothes, a trashcan, a toilet bowl to put things in & a bathtub to climb in & out of that has oooh, a faucet!... just to name a few favorites... Hair freshly pinned out of my eyes lacquered in mascara, I go to my baby boy's room, expecting to spend the next 10 minutes gathering up toys & such... but no, this little guy is much too slick for me (pun intended)... I open the door only to find him busy styling his hair... with VASELINE. And yes, he was using his baby brush too all proper like. ;-) Palmolive couldn't even help us... Woohoo! Went to the eye doctor to make sure the dryness in my left eye had healed, & it had! So I asked about trying the Acuvue Oasys lenses to help prevent drying out my eyes again. I love them! I didn't even realize I had put in the left one because it went in so easily. I had to check and check to make sure it was in & that I hadn't dropped it. Again, I love these! They're much easier to put in and are so comfortable. I forget I'm wearing them. It's also a lot harder to even see them in my eyes, and they seem smaller than that other trial pair. Love all around. contact lenses drying out 3M Commercial Office Supply Div.
