Inferno - Eyjafjallajökull Eruption
Inferno - Eyjafjallajökull Eruption
Eyjafjallajokull, Iceland YES! I got close to the eruption. At one point a bit too close but more details on that later. It was the most awesome experience I have had in years. The size of it (even if its a very small eruption), the loud noise, the explosions, the heat, the smell, the melting glaciers, the 100m high lava-fall, the location itself made this an experience I will never forget. Being this close to nature in all its force is... well I can describe it in words, it was a little surreal. This image is taken with a 200mm lens so the two persons are not that close to the eruption. They stand on another small mountain about 400m away from it. The lens just fools the eye. I good lucky enough to get a ride with a super jeep over Myrdalsjokul. To get to this place now you either need to take the steep 5 hour hike up to the mountain ridge or drive over the next glacier Myrdalsjokull which host a much more dangerous volcano called Katla. If that one goes off, as it historically has always done when Eyjafjalljokull erupts, it will have at least regional if not global effect on the climate.
