Richard Bloomfield's art

After careers in mechanical engineering and computer software development, I have taken up art again!

I mostly draw from life, frequenting the Palette & Chisel Academy of Fine Arts, The Drawing Workshop, Platform Studios and Tom Robinson Studio/Gallery in Chicago.

I strive for accuracy,  yet in a loose and relaxed style.  When drawing people, I try to get a likeness and I have added and grouped together drawings of certain models that I've drawn often and/or over the years to show my success - or failure in this regard.  My favorite instrument of late: the ballpoint pen.

Opening for group show at Tom Robinson Studio/Gallery on June 1st!

Pencil/Conte crayon
There's something about the way pencil scratches along the tooth of the paper.  And the blackness of charcoal!

Yup, these are all done with a standard Bic Ultra ballpoint pen.  No need to sharpen, doesn't smudge, and keeps the whole process very casual.
But forget about erasing!

Pastels sort of bridge the gap between drawing and painting.  With pastels you're limited to a "premixed" palette of colors, and be careful not to saturate the paper!

Sketchbook pages
Most of these pages are filled with gesture poses, but many are done out in the real world, usually sitting at a cafe and sometimes inspired by "innocent bystanders".
