  • Thanks for a Great Season

    Dear Team,

Thanks for a great season!  This will definitely be one I remember.  Everyone trained hard and performed at their best, but most of all I think we all enjoyed it.

Speaking of which, we fared well as a team at the Sectional Championships on Friday.  All official results are linked from the results page.

Sadly though, Friday was our last race of the season; my last race ever with the team.  But I hope and expect that you juniors, sophomores, and freshmen will continue to enjoy our longstanding traditions of hard work, success, and Glenville pizza for many years to come.  I also expect that you will enjoy the endurance of many new traditions that only began in the last season or two, like the summer practices that your new captain Simon Vogel will be holding, this website which Kyle O’Neil will now be managing, and of course the chocolate on chocolate post-race cookies.

Although I will be around for the rest of the school year, I wish you a successful and enjoyable 2012 season.  To the boys: you are all very talented and have great potential to finally take back the League Champion banner.  To the girls: may you finally find a fifth runner!  Thank you again.

    Sincerely,
    Zachary

  • FIRST EVER HOME MEET THIS TUESDAY!
Last week's results show we were only 3 points off Briarcliff!  With our home course map now available, its time to get excited for a showdown at the first ever cross country meet to be held at Blind Brook High School.

There will music, a professional photographer, cheerleaders, and (we hope) plenty of fans.  So tell everyone to come.  It will be quite a show, and your support will help us defeat our closest rivals, Briarcliff.

Training

  • Core Excersizes
Strong core muscles are extremely important for maintaining proper form, which will help you run more efficiently (faster with less effort) and to have that runner's six-pack.  There are three primary groups of muscles that make up your core: your front (upper and lower), your side (internal and external obliques and lateral flexors), and your lower back.  It is important to exercise ALL of these muscles.

Some recommended exercises that we do in practice (and that you should be doing at home 2-3 nights a week):

    Front, Upper
    1. crunches
NOT sit-ups!  (Going past halfway up does not build muscle and actually damages your spine!)
    Front, Lower
    1. V-ups
Sit on your glutes with your legs folded and off the ground, extend your legs out and lower your body, fold back up.
    2. leg lifts
Lie with your back flat on the ground, arms at your sides, and hold your legs a few inches off the ground.  MAKE SURE you push your lower back into the ground, squeezing your abs, otherwise you can damage your lower back.
    Obliques
    1. rotations-and front, lower
Sit on your glutes with your legs folded, but off the ground.  Twist to each side, touching your knuckles on the ground.
    2. diagonal crunches-and front, upper
Fold up to touch your right elbow to your left knee and vice versa.
    Lower Back
    1. superman-lower back
Lie on your stomach with your arms and legs extended straight out and off the ground.
Any (depending on which way you face)
    1. planks
Keep your body straight and off the ground, facing either down, up, or to the side.
