Handsome Tato GAEL GARCIA BERNAL & sexy Beto DIEGO LUNA are excellent in their portrayal as the competiting brothers. Throughout the film, their bond seemed genuine as one can feel they were both actually 'related'. Both brothers are working on a banana plantation when they are discovered one day on the soccer playing field by a flashy scouting agent, Batuta, GUILLERMO FRACELLA. The agent can only take one to Mexico City to play in the famous Amaranto Club. There is a 'shoot-out' on the soccer field, and TATO (GAEL GARCIA BERNAL) is chosen. After an outrageous initiation process 'butt' naked in the shower room, TATO is accepted by his teammates. His playing style quickly earns him the nickname, 'Corny' (which would be better translated as TACKY, as in old fashioned & unrefined). TATO wants to be a famous Mexican singer, unfortunately, he's not talented but buys his way into a record & video. (The audience roared with laughter over the cheezy lyrics & costume!) Of course, the record goes no where, while his soccor career brings him unlimited fame , fortune & power. Beto calls up the agent to bring his step-brother into the relm of soccer, in a competating team. Beto ( DIEGO LUNA) comes to Mexico city abandoning his family in the hicks. BETO also becomes famous in his own right as a goalie. Unfortunately, his paychecks fly out the window with his gambling addiction. Both brothers head towards their destruction with the lack of knowledge on how to handle the sudden fame & fortune. Women, money, drugs, & sibling rivalery get the both of them. There climax of destruction comes when they both have to compete against each other in a game which will decide the fate of each one. A previous encounter hints of the outcome of the game. (One wishes that ALFRED HITCHCOCK could redo ROPE or STRANGERS ON A TRAIN with these two. Their screen presence steals every scene. ) The masterful director CARLOS CUARON and the producers, his brother ALFONSO CUARON, along with ALEJANDRO GONZALEZ INARRITU, & GUILLERMO DEL TORO have hit a gold mine for Hispanic audiences with two of the worlds sexiest stars playing competitive brothers who land soccer careers. They were able to capture the mad devotion of success, soccer , family, money & fame in one film. Beautifully composed & filmed with at times a handheld camera. Some of the banana plantation shots in the begining of the film are pure cinamatic art. The story unfolds with just the right amount of tension and tease that one looks forward to the next scene throughout the film. RUDO Y CURSI truely explores the 'brotherhood' or connection that one has with a best friend or family member, with its closeness and competiveness, as well as with their 'team' be it soccer or country. Overall, its story and charaters are true, fun and real. I am aware this may not be strictly by the rules of a 100 Strangers Project by getting the story a day after the photo – It was impossible as Tahsin Cooking 5 traditional cooked breakfast’s at that time of the photo shoot !! .. This turned into a interview style meeting, I thought it worked quite well and most likely not get the chance again : The story goes like this .. From the beginning I pre-arranged I would call in the following morning @ 8am to take his story after taking his photograph. I was on time , walking in sat down with the regulars , Funny the Girl in one of the front shop photo's was sitting in the same identical place studying as I saw her before.. I never saw look up once .. Very studious of her ? Tashin didnt see me straight away but soon I heard a " Hey CJ !! Coffee .." Yes please Double strength black with one sugar. Lovely welcome. He walks through with a full English breakfast and a separate plate of chips !! - He Jokes... Breakfast ? I kindly decline ... . Tashin seemed well in control of the kitchen , opens at 6am he claims to appeal to the many local contractors in the area ( The only Cafe to open at some unearthly hour of the day I hear you say in Somerset to do so !! The word is spreading ) .. It appeared to be busy with people waiting for their orders; Tashin has a certain gift of the gab and I may suggest he could charm the birds of the trees." Talking / Cracking a joke while cooking, it's done right in front of the customers. There was lively Banter between the punters espically as I was waiting for a further picture and life history. It was not long before Tahsin had time sit and chat – He's articulate man with a friendly smile. His South End of London accent gave it an extra twist. He explained ..To his friends he is fondly known as “Tyson” He laughed and pointed to his nose – Like the Boxer !! I didnt say but thought you could have been called Rocky ? When growing up in the South of London as a kid you had to look after yourself you know , the odd scrape was inevitable! He joked with a smile and a twinkle in his eye. He came to Somerset in the Mid 90’s opened up the 1st kebab shop in Taunton , went from strength to strength but after many years decided to move to Bridgwater with his wife Stacey Who I met later that afternoon by chance. At this point Tyson asked me to come and take a look at a picture of his family ( At this point he wanted me to put this in the project / his full permission ) There were two pictures hung up one of his Mother and his Brother , He softly began to explain recently his brother regrettably committed suicide , this must have been a hard bitter pill for Tahsin ( for anybody ) in fact to swallow. His Mum in shock because of what happened (explained Tahsin) She never really got over the shock and died of a broken heart in her sleep one night just a few weeks later. It was for me to see the hint of saddness in his eyes - who wouldnt Be ? Tahsin remained with a smile though , he said he is still proud of them both and hold them in very high in his thoughts and memory. Then we sit back at the table, totally surprised to hear that Tyson is a new Dad ! Tyson and his wife Stacey have a new baby boy of 4 weeks. I wholeheartedly congratulated them both but said what you opened the new shop and coped with the birth of your son named Adyn in the 1st / same week ? – He hesitated , smiled and did mention the 1st week was a little tough going. I should say so .. I called back in the afternoon to capture the portrait I have used as the Title – Tyson looked straight in the camera like a rabbit in headlights – I know I thought – Asked Stacey; say something to distract him for me it's your husband ( cheekily shouted across the room and made a loving remark or similar lol !! He turned and smiled - Photo taken - job done - well I hope , hope you enjoyed this rather interesting Stranger .. No 17 All I can say – This for me I guess makes this project rather special , I saw Tahsin two mornings in a row and thought next time i pass Im taking his photo – he may have a story to tell !
