Mecaphesa sp. (eyes01) - alternating eye color
Mecaphesa sp. (eyes01) - alternating eye color
Change of eye color in Mecaphesa sp. I thought this might be of interest to some. I was attempting some close-up photography with this spider, which was actually being very well behaved and sitting still, when I noticed that two of the eyes appeared to be alternating in color from black to a deep red. I initially thought it was a trick of the light, and perhaps in a way it is, but I finally discerned that it was due to a muscular movement of the eyes, perhaps as it changed focus. So whether the eye color is actually changing, or it's just that the position of the individual eye changes and therefore catches the light differently, I'm not sure. But it's pretty neat, none the less. Unfortunately the still images don't give it justice when compared to watching it first hand. I couldn't be the Afghan Girl for sure. She has really bright eyes and I can't change that with mine unless I put coloured contact lenses.
