Good Advice: Malicious Complaint Email Claiming It’s From BBB

Better Business Bureau is issuing an urgent SCAM alert cautioning businesses and consumers about an email that is purporting to be from a bbb.org email address and references the Council of Better Business Bureaus in Arlington, VA., about a recently filed complaint.

Spam email subject headings can include:

  • "The Better Business Bureau needs your immediate response"
  • "The Better Business Bureau customer complaint"

New variations of the spam email includes:

  • "Unauthorized bank transfers to your company account"
  • For other examples, visit our homepage link on our website: www.mbc.bbb.org

Should you receive such an email do the following:

1. Disregard its message.

2. Report the email by forwarding it to phishing@council.bbb.org.

3. Delete the email after forwarding.

4. Due to the virulent nature of the email run a virus scan if you have clicked on the link within the email.

Why is the BBB name being used
The Better Business Bureau is a well-known name and like a bank or telephone service provider we can be used by spammers to make them appear legitimate. Better Business Bureau is in no way connected to these emails and we can assure you that your information stored on the BBB system is safe and protected. This is a mass-spamming campaign that is targeting the public at large and not only Accredited Businesses.

The Better Business Bureau is working together with international law enforcement to track down the origin of these emails and plans to shutdown these fake websites. Thank you for your cooperation.
