*Kindergarteners have started the year learning about lines, shapes, and primary and secondary colors. They have already experienced drawing, painting, and collage. Later this year, they will experience clay and paper weaving.

Wayne Thiebaud Cakes

The Kindergarteners created artwork based on the paintings of cakes by Wayne Thiebaud (pronounced “Tee-bo”). Wayne Thiebaud is an American painter who loved to paint images from popular culture (Pop Art) and has several paintings of sweets and cakes on bakery shelves.
The kindergarteners discussed what lines and shapes they saw in the cake paintings. They also learned the art term “background”. The background of a painting or drawing is the environment or space around the main objects.
First the students learned the correct way to use painting materials and painted their own backgrounds for their cakes using tempera paint.
Then the Kindergarteners discussed what a collage was and were asked to create their own cakes using construction paper. A collage is an artwork created from cut shapes which are glued together on a separate paper. They were also shown how to make the appearance of lines by cutting long skinny shapes.
The results are beautiful images of mixed-media cakes!

Kandinsky Dots

The Kindergarteners created dot drawings in the style of Wassily Kandinsky. First the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds was read to the students for inspiration. This story is about a little girl named Vashti who, after thinking she is unable to draw, receives inspiration from her teacher and is able to create wonderful dot paintings. Next, the students discussed a color study painting by Kandinsky and were asked to create their own dots surrounded by concentric circles similar to the artist’s.
