Cake decorating is one of the sugar arts that uses icing or frosting and other edible decorative elements to make otherwise plain cakes more visually interesting. Alternatively, cakes can be molded and sculpted to resemble three-dimensional persons, places and things.

Close Encounters Cake - Devils Tower front

Sister's Birthday. Close Encounters DVD requested. Cake Idea formed. Super pleased with how it turned out. Could've probably made the Devils Tower liney-ness more liney (I did this with icing on the crumb-coat rather than carving it). Excited that I got to stake the mountain to the cake for sturdiness - felt very Ace of Cakes. I coloured the mountain, but bought the black fondant. Thank you Spotlight for your excellent cake decorating supplies.

rosebuds practice cake 4-19-08

I was trying out a new recipe for both the cake and icing, and decided to go ahead and practice a bit while I was at it. :) This is just a practice cake... but it was incredibly yummy! A friend gave me an idea for this one... bridesmaids' luncheon cake. This is a 6", but can be cut into about 8 slices, and all of them small enough not to ruin folks' figures for the big day. :)
