Terminologies

A little page we could use to keep track of all these media and theoretical terms and phrases that we're inundated with!

 

convergence - The tendency for different technological systems to evolve towards performing similar tasks. ex. Today's generation of mobile phones that can makes calls, send emails, take pictures/films, send email, access the web, scan barcodes...


crowdsourcing - The act of taking a job traditionally performed by a designated agent (usually an employee) and outsourcing it to an undefined, generally large group of people in the form of an open call. Or, the application of Open Source principles to fields outside of software (source).


dataveillance - The systematic use of personal data systems in the investigation or monitoring of the actions or communications of one or more person (source). Google being a well known example, and Scroogle being a reaction to this (link).


hegemony - A concept that has been used to describe and explain the dominance of one social group over another, such that the ruling group or hegemon acquires some degree of consent from the subordinate, as opposed to dominance purely by force (source). (page)


link journalism - Linking to other reporting on the web to enhance, complement, source, or add more context to a journalist’s original reporting (source).


Reithian - Referencing the former Director General of the BBC Lord Reith's concept of broadcasting as a way of educating the masses.


thintelligence - "By using online as an exclusive source of news people are starting to consume more information but -- and this is the important point -- across fewer topic areas" (source).
