This session gives you the opportunity to bring the various theoretical models to bare on the broadcast 'Industry'.
TV, Radio, Internet and micro/mobile media broadcasting are industries. We need to look at them in terms of economics. power and discourse. Of course at the moment in particular they are industries undergoing massive change. What we will look at this week is how that industry works, how it sees itself and we will see if any of the theoretical models we have looked at can contribute anything interesting to our understanding.
We will use Broadcast magazine as a starting point. In groups you will look through a copy of Broadcast for evidence of:
Your task as a group will be to create a simple Powerpoint (Google Presentation) presentation making some clear points about your findings, using your theoretical toolkit.
You will be able to use the PC in the room for Net research. If you have a laptop and want to bring that as well, that's good.
Obviously feel free to do some research beforehand and add any findings, ideas, questions, possible themes here.

I thought the following might provide a much needed instructional giggle for those struggling with the assignment :)
The TEN COMMANDMENTS OF THE POSTMODERN (according to Richard Richner)
I. Thou shalt have no other gods before language and its only begotten offspring, text.
II. Thou shalt not make unto thee any big stories that explain everything everywhere always.
III. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to the liberal humanist image of the autonomous self.
IV. Thou shalt not take the name of DIFFERENCE in vain; for it will confer all the blessings for which thou mayest hope.
V. Remember the days of the past in thine own fashion and according to thine own textual need.
VI. Honor thy father and thy mother as progenitors of thine essential social process.
VII. Thou shalt not kill if thou canst create a suitable text to that end.
VIII. Thou shalt not refrain from entering and leaving various modes of being, though they appear contradictory.
IX. Thou shalt not condemn the use of multinational capital to virtualize everything--thy neighbor's house, wife, manservant, maidservant, ox, ass, anything.
X. Thou shalt keep this item open for further developments.
Greetings!
