Assessment will be based on two essays of a maximum of 1500 words in length, a short 'programme' (audio or video or whatever!) and a 1000-word self-evaluation exercise.

First assignment. Due: 25 November 2009

  1. “The ideology of public service broadcasting still dominates contemporary discussion of the BBC”. Discuss.
  2. How useful is the concept of the ‘Gaze’ in analyzing contemporary broadcast media?
  3. To what extent is broadcast documentary dominated by “the Author”?
  4.   “Trust me, I’m telling you stories”. Discuss the extent to which contemporary broadcast documentary can be seen in terms of relations of power/knowledge.
  5. Negotiated question. To be agreed with Paul by 5th November 2008.

Second assignment. Due: 3rd February 2010

  1. Discuss the extent to which 'citizen media' presents a threat to broadcasters 
  2. 'Broadcasting in the Conversation Economy is about content relationships'. Discuss.
  3. Analyse the potential effects of microbroadcasting and p2p casting on broadcast business models 
  4. Question to be negotiated
