It's all just a notebook

I've always been a big fan of notebooks - simple black, plain or lined - and a pen. Scribbles, doodles, mindmaps, observations, questions, poems even. I always carry one. It's wehere my 'lectures' start, my articles develop and my thinking builds. I have an analog one and a digital one. One in my pocket and one in the Cloud.

In my idea of media education, we always researching, thinking and connecting. A small notebook and a pen are great but a digital notebook allows us to connect the notebooks together as well as add links, pictures, sounds and multimedia. And it's all free and simple.

In simple terms:
  • Create an account at www.evernote.com. This will house your notebooks in the Cloud.
  • Set up a New notebook callled 'birkbeckmedia'. Make it 'public'. You can set up other notebooks if you like.
  • There are different ways you can add to your notebook:
  • While you're surfing the web, you can 'clip' a page or even just a sentence. In the evenrnote downloads sectioon, download the web clipper.
  • You can email something to your notebook. In your evernote setting you can find a unique email address. When you mail text, pictures or whatever to that address, it is added to your notebook.
  • You can use that email address to add stories from your Google reader.
  • You can also use that email address to add photos. Just send a MMS message to that address.
  • If you have an iPhone or Windows Mobile phone, you can download free software that enable you to add information easily.
  • If you want to make it even easier, set up a reQall account. Got to www.reqall.com and set up a free account. When you have an account, go to your settings and make your evernote address your email address. Now you can phone an 0800 or 0207 number, speak your note and reQall will, transcribe it and add it to your notebook.
  • You can also add reQall as one of your GoogleTalk friends and then send IM messages to reQall which will then be forwrded to your Evernote notebook.
So, what could you add to your notebook?
  • A story you find in Google reader
  • A web page or bit of a web page
  • An idea for an article or essay paragraph
  • A question
  • A photo of a billboard ad
  • A photo of a newspaper page (evernote will make the text in the image searchable)
  • A photo of a textbook page
  • A thought...
  • ... anything else.
Once your information, idea or data is in your notebook, you can add tags or keywords to each piece, linking them together and making them searchable.

And don't forget to add the address of your birkbeckmedia notebook to our notebooks pages (PIB and OtA)  so we can link them all together.
