Animals are broadly divided into two groups, invertebrates and vertebrates. We begin our exploration of animals with the spineless wonders called invertebrates, or animals without a backbone. These animals include the very simple sponge ( SpongeBob Squarepants namesake), corals, crabs, octopus, scallops, seastars and worms. The backdrop for our study of animals will be the coral reef ecosystem. We will investigate the types of invertebrates found on a reef and research the environmental problems that are threatening the coral reef ecosystem.
