What is a block schedule?
Like many middle and high schools, Binford operates on what is called a block schedule. This means that classes are not held every day. We have "even" and "odd" days for classes. Class periods are called "phases." Phases 1, 3, 5, and 7 are held on "odd" calendar days (i.e. the 1st, 3rd , 5th, 7th, 9th, etc. days of the month). Phases 2, 4, 5, and 6 are held on "even" calendar days (i.e. 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, etc.) Fifth phase is held every day and includes both a class period and a lunch period. Using the block schedule allows for more time to be spent in classroom instruction and less time changing classes. It may sound confusing at first, but students get used to it very quickly.
How do parent-teacher conferences work?
Parent-teacher conference days are held twice a year, once in October and once in March. In addition to the regularly scheduled parent-teacher conference days, parents are encouraged to make appointments with teachers whenever they have any concern.
For the regularly scheduled conference days, the times are 4:00 - 7:00 pm on Thursday and 8:30 - 11:30 am on Friday. On Friday of parent-teacher conference day, there is no school for students. On parent-teacher conference day, parents arrive at the school anytime during the above time frame. Meetings with the teachers are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Parents are asked to keep the meetings brief as many other parents may be waiting to speak with the teachers as well. If parents need to have a lengthy meeting with the teacher, it would be best to schedule this at another time.
