Camera Hacking, etc., etc.

useless banter from camera hacker billw

General Info...

camerahacking.com is the place to learn about hacking one-time-use digital cams and from CVS,  Rite-Aid, Longs, Ritz/Wolf, and Target. These camera's are all manufactured by Pure Digital Inc.

John Maushammer is one of the original Pure Digital Dakota cam hackers. Since then he has removed the flash chip from various cameras and extracted their secrets, and is considered an uber-hacker by most who know him. His website has lots of useful information and software.

Tim Gipson is also one of the original Pure Digital Dakota cam hackers and continues to be a great help to the camera hacking community, in addition to being a hulluva nice guy. His site has great info and software for the Dakota.

Though I'm a second gen one-time-use camera hacker, I'm no slouch in the camera hacking department either. Here's a list of some of my contributions to the scene.

Someone requested information about my pv2 time-lapse patch at camerahacking.com today. (It's a firmware patch that gets the camera to take pictures on an interval). Here's a site that details a pv2 kite setup from start to finish, along with the time-lapse patch info and some nice pics. (way to go pete!)

Writing software is sometimes gratifying, but this small code tweak I wrote for the pv2 firmware managed to take my breath away. You don't often get that kind of high from coding. (thanks for the picture deanville!)

Some mods are general enough to be useful to all kinds of cameras... Tired of your fixed focus cam? Brite eye's pinhole/macro mod is one solution! Got the shakes and a cam without a tripod mount? Take it easy on the coffee and check out Ted_Z's retrofit tripod mod! Cam too noisy? Cynewolf's headphone modification is useful even for non-camera gear!

CVS "Nightvision" Cam is a fun mod to try, if you don't mind looking like one of the collective!  Boodle gives us a trio of fun projects with his pages on 3D capture, Infrared modification, and macro modification.  BrandonU's smartmedia nand flash chip reader is the hardcore hacking solution for getting at practically any device's flash memory!

Today I recieved a neat item in the mail, the USB cradle/insert that Pure Digital uses in their processing stations. Here's some pictures of it!
