What Is Yoga? Yoga is the most ancient and respected of natural methods for achieving and maintaining a high level of physical, mental and emotional health. The movements of yoga are extremely profound in nature. They reach deep into the organism to massage, stimulate, relieve tension, work out stiffness, release trapped energy, revitalize and assist in overcoming many physical and emotional problems and disorders. There are different types of yoga and the type most often referred to requires physical movement, breath control and concentration--this is called "hatha" yoga. It is not religious or spiritual but rather represents the physical movements which resembles stretching and flexing different body parts including balance movements and inversions.

What is Bikram Yoga? A type of hatha yoga which consists of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises, performed in a room heated to 38-42 degrees. It is the perfect lifetime fitness program. The Bikram approach to yoga practice is totally different from that of any other. First, the mind and emotions are soothed. Next, the body is placed in a series of hatha yoga postures held for brief intervals while the mind is fully focused on what the body is feeling. The posture sequence works the body from the inside out, establishing harmony among all the body systems, strengthening the muscles and of course, enhancing flexibility. Each posture was chosen to prepare the body for the next one. The Bikram method also works the
organs, glands and nervous system in a profoundly beneficial manner. To truly understand Bikram Yoga, you have to experience it. The glowing feeling you have after class is a combination of the relaxing warmth that permeates deep into the tissues of the body augmented by the posture sequence and breathing exercises. While some people may feel it is unusual to exercise in heat, the experience can be addicting to some but therapuetic to most practioners.

People of any age and condition can do this yoga. Some acutely ill have been cured of chronic disease (including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, chronic back pain, etc.) as a result of practicing Bikram's yoga. Many athletes including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and John McEnroe attribute lack of injuries and longevity in their sport to this yoga. Professionals say it gives them mental clarity and increased energy helping them to excel in their fields. And all Bikram yoga students agree that it helps them look and feel great, lose weight and reduce stress. Physically, it is the perfect blend of strength, flexibility and balance. Mentally, it trains the mind in five key ways: to have faith in one's self, gain self control, increase determination, improve concentration and build patience.

How long is the class? Bikram's Hatha Yoga Class is a full body, 90-minute workout, consisting of 26 yoga postures and 2 breathing exercises. is considered a beginning class, anybody can do it -- any age, size,
shape, condition, background, problem. It's accessible and
non-exclusive. Basic postures are performed. There are no headstands
or esoteric movements. Everyone can do them. At the same don't
confuse this as a beginners class. The beauty of yoga and Bikram yoga
is that postures can performed at maximum intensity--according to your
condition, ability and body type. Therefore, simple postures done in
this way can be considered an "advanced" workout. It is a basic
workout that can be made as simple or advanced according to the
individual.
Each class can and should be challenging and you will be expected to make demands of yourself. It requires tremendous concentration, patience, determination, trust, and discipline. These are the nonphysical qualities that you will develop as you heal and strengthen your body.
In order to achieve the best results from your Bikram Yoga practice you must be consistent and determined. But isn't this the same for anything worth achieving? Yes. Nothing escapes the watchful eye of our chief instructor, Huiping Mo. She is especially sensitive to the needs of beginning students. All classes are in English with Chinese when needed. Good teachers give information, great teachers motivate, Huiping inspires. Her teaching methods have been honed by years of professional dance study, practice and training and fitness instructing by some of the world's most distinguished dance and yoga teachers and scholars. The “Real” Hot Yoga System From The USA If you have tried a hot yoga class, you
probably thought that hot yoga began when someone started doing some stretching
in a sauna then had the idea to use heat in the yoga studio. You probably
haven’t given much thought to the series of postures done in class. The interesting thing is that many of China’s hot
yoga teachers don’t know the origins of this type of yoga that has become
popular over the past few years. If you
already like hot yoga, then you will love it after you read this article. If you don’t like hot yoga then you will at
least understand its origins and how it got started in China and why
it is becoming so popular. Hot yoga didn’t happen by chance, in
fact, it was carefully planned and scientifically created with the assistance
of doctors by internationally renowned yoga teacher Bikram Choudhury from India. He brought his system to the United States
in 1971 at the invitation of the American Medical Association. Bikram's hatha
yoga system is a routine of 26 poses which works the whole body in 90 minutes.
The poses work synergistically and cumulatively to return the body to a
balanced state. Bikram spent much time to develop this sequence, which is so
special he copyrighted it. But wait…how
can he copyright a yoga pose, because nobody owns yoga poses, right? Yes, the poses belong to what is called Hatha
yoga, but the sequence of poses and how they are performed, the dialogue used
to teach it was developed by Bikram—this is what is copyrighted, and NOT the
individual poses. Those who have tried a real Bikram class have an innate understanding that the poses feel “logical” or “comfortable” for the body—that’s because the sequence flows perfectly from posture to the next. This is one reason why Bikram Yoga is effective. Think of Bikram’s system as a cake recipe. You have to use the right ingredients in the right amounts if you want to get the cake you want. Well the posture sequence and instruction to perform represents the ingredients. Now what about the heat? Think of the heat as another “ingredient” in the cake recipe. You need it if you want your “cake” to be just right. Bikram found the heat therapeutic for the body. He tried different temperatures and humidities and chose his current standard. If the studio is heated properly with the right humidity, you will sweat. Heat generated from yoga practice without a heated room will cause some to perspire anyway. The result is an invigorating workout experience that can compare to other forms of physical activity. The great thing about yoga in general is that anyone can do it and such is true as well for Bikram Yoga. Bikram Yoga's twenty-six posture exercises moves fresh, oxygenated blood to one hundred percent of your body, to every organ and muscle fiber, restoring all systems to healthy working order, just as nature intended. Proper weight, muscle tone, vibrant good health, and a sense of well-being will automatically follow. Bikram has taught famous athletes and movie stars, doctors, lawyers, businessmen and housewives --everybody's life demands the same thing – good health. Famous music producer Quincy Jones had a serious brain disorder -- yoga gave him his health back. What Yoga Is Good For: Bikram Yoga is not only good medicine it is good preventive medicine.
