Captain James Cook The greatest English sailor, Captain and explorer of all time. He undertook perilous voyages to unknown waters and returned home after making many discoveries including The Great South Land - Australia. (Is always referred to as Captain but was promoted from Lieutenant to Commander and Post-Captain, a higher level than Captain) Captain Cook was a brave man, a Master Captain, scientist, navigator, sometime botanist and one who demonstrated compassion toward his crew and kept them comparatively healthy. One of his many exploits was to navigate and document the east coast of Australia including a masterful navigation of the Barrier Reef. (All with astonishing accuracy, even by todays standards). Born North Yorkshire England 1728 Died in Hawaii (Speared by the Natives) 1779 Aged 51. He had childred but they all died without descendants.
