The flank of Baianas is the most important section of any Samba School in a Carnival parade, preferably composed of elderly ladies clothed in garments reminiscent of the historical “Baianas”, descendents of African tribes such as Ioruba, Nago, Mina, Fula and Haussa. The Nago, who more commonly are found participating in Afro-Brazilian religious ceremonies of Candomble, are short and stocky and use strong and striking colours, very typical of modern day flanks of Baianas in most Carnivals. The classical garments of the Baianas are composed of a full “balloon” skirt with layers of lace-trimmed and stiffened petticoats, a Bata or lace-trimmed blouse, a shawl to cover shoulders or sometimes used as a turban. The garments are usually heavily-dressed with adornments such as ear-rings, necklaces and armbands of gold, silver, coral and natural beads, finished off with low sandals or shoes. When the flank of Baianas comes dancing down the avenue, they almost appear like colourful spinning-tops swirling across the street. A most impressive sight!
Dots n Donuts necklace
Dots n Donuts necklace
With her wide brimmed hat and light pink sundress with matching delicate sandals, she was almost ready for the race!! Today would be a wondrous day, if her family's horse were to win. She carefully chose her signature jewelry; because the ranch was called Double Circle, almost all her jewelry contained circles. Dots N Donuts necklace incorporates three dotted glass beads framed by RAW stitched seed beads in complimentary colors. The beautiful pink mauve is off-set by the shimmering blue gray. Spaced between and around these framed beads are four donuts of the same beautiful colors. The components are linked together by sterling silver closed jump rings, giving the necklace flow and flexibility. Two beadwoven toggles on each end of an embellished RAW rope complete the necklace. This necklace measures approximately 22 and 1/2 inches (57cm) long. I was in Atlanta shopping when I discovered the glass round flat beads. They were an interesting color and I decided to see what I could do with them. I originally wanted to make square frames, but circles looked much better!! Don't you think so?
