ABOUT:

Brighton and Hove’s Wildlife Forum

The forum was instigated to give local wildlife groups and those residents interested in local biodiversity and wildlife conservation a strong voice in negotiations with the Council and other bodies. The Forum aims to represent wildlife interests in the city.

Originally there was a Wildlife Advisory Group (WAG) established by the council in November 1999. Members included representatives from Natural England, Sussex Wildlife Trust, Sussex Downs Conservation Board and the Universities along with those from the Sussex Botanical Recording Society, CPRE and the Local Wildlife Site Groups. Unfortunately the council was not prepared to support the group in September 2009 so the active members reformed under a revized name.

The first meeting of the new group was held in October 2009 under the name of “Brighton and Hove Wildlife Advisory Group and Local Wildlife Groups Forum”. In March 2010, this was shortened to “Brighton and Hove’s Wildlife Forum”. It incorporates both the local wildlife groups, and wildlife specialists, who are qualified to offer advice and suggestions to other groups, including the City Council when necessary.

Meetings are held quarterly with a web-based discussion page to help in sharing communication between these meetings. These quarterly meetings are arranged to link with the City Sustainability Partnership to which the Forum as a core member provides minutes and advice.
