30 March 1978 – 21 June 1979

Known as Berry Creek Fire Control Group

Inaugural meeting held 30 March 1978 at Noonamah Pub with 25 people attending, including Mike Rowell and Fred Luff from Bushfires Council (BFC).

John Lugg elected chairman and Fire Patrol Officer.

  • Opening of new town HQ for Bushfires Council

21 June 1979 – 11 September 1980

Known as Berry Creek Fire Protection Group

  • Radio frequency still not allocated
  • Public water points on pipeline sealed off

Meeting of 20 March 1980

  • New Bushfires Act came into force from 1 May 1980
  • Steps taken to form a volunteer bushfire brigade

Meeting of 17 April 1980

  • Discussion of area under our control to form sub groups with trailers and radios:
    • 34 Mile, Hughes, Acacia Hills, Manton Dam
  • Skidder to come

Meeting of 15 May 1980

  • Skidder arrived at Frank Gabel’s
  • Radios are ready

Meeting of 5 June 1980

  • New radios and frequency at last!

 

11 September 1980 – 10 May 1984

Known as Berry Creek Volunteer Bushfire Brigade

  • Extra radio sent to Katherine area
  • Requested repeater station and public watering points

Meeting of 6 November 1980

  • 135km radius from Darwin GPO is a Fire Protection Zone

  • Discussion on more formal organisation

Meeting of 18 June 1981

  • Push for BFC to help contact people at 40 Mile and Elizabeth River Estate to make move for Fire Protection Groups

Meeting of 6 August 1981

  • Approached by 34 Mile Progress Association re land, recreation reserve and fire depot. We accepted.
  • Frank Gabel to attend Fire School at Camp McKay in August 1981

Meeting of 24 September 1981

  • Berry Creek Volunteer Bushfire Brigade is the first brigade to be gazetted in the NT
  • Proposed central fire depot on proposed community reserve at Livingstone

Meeting of 19 November 1981

  • BFC asked to enquire on progress of reserve/depot site
  • Bill Goodwin keeping eye out for fire truck for Brigade
  • Darwin River/Berry Springs group ask for loan of skidder – not available.

Meeting of 4 March 1982

  • 1 acre block approved, can start building any time
  • New group formed Douglas-Daly
  • Prepare simple constitution as we are now a gazetted body
  • 17 Mile get new fire truck – town

Meeting 14 October 1982

  • Help for phones in Acacia Hills area

Meeting 10 March 1983

  • Ash Wednesday Bushfire Appeal instituted by Frank Gabel. $600 raised and sent to Cudlee Creek CFS, Adelaide Hills
  • Brigade likely to get Datsun Patrol fire units

Meeting of 14 April 1983

  • Noonamah tower operational
  • Fencing work started at depot
  • Request for vehicles before going to Government auctions

Meeting of 19 May 1983

  • Skidder returned, but transmission still not right
  • Help requested for welding on Nissan fire truck at BFC HQ
  • New Berry Springs depot opened 28 May 1983

Meeting of 16 June 1983

  • Welcome to new members from Elizabeth Valley
  • ARC offered reinforcing mesh for depot, Brambles to deliver

Meeting of 4 August 1983

  • Land has been gazetted
  • Need for training

Meeting of 6 October 1983

  • Berry Springs lost their fire unit in a fire. Emphasised the need for training program

Meeting of 10 November 1983

  • Next on list for a demountable
  • Advised skidder beyond economical repair. Request first option if it is to be disposed
  • Public education – they need to clean up their own blocks

Known as Livingstone Volunteer Bushfire Brigade

  • Depot area fenced, demountable, Nissan fire unit, trailer unit for depot
  • Skidder has been removed from area

  • Welcome new members Acacia Hills
  • Holes dug for demountable

Meeting of 18 October 1984

  • First meeting in new Brigade HQ
  • Building arrived Saturday 13 October 1984
  • Water connected with reserve trustees
  • Discussion with possibility of Acacia Hills forming their own group

Meeting of 27 June 1985

  • Acacia Hills and Manton Dam have formed Volunteer Bushfire Brigade

Meeting of 3 October 1985

  • Approached by Electoral Office to use building for next election

  • Max Kennon appointed Fire Warden
  • New constitution

Meeting of 30 June 1986

  • House at Lot 7 Livingstone Road lost to fire
  • International truck to be used on roads or good breaks only – no scrub bashing
