Alice Springs Volunteer Bushfire Brigade

The Alice Springs Volunteer Bushfire Brigade was formed in 1996 and has a gazetted area of 50 km radius from the control tower at the airport (excluding the town boundary NTFRS). That doesn’t mean we stop at that point, the brigade has assisted with controlled burning and fire suppression at Newhaven Nature reserve (430km), Erldunda Station (200km) and Arltunga (90km) to name a few. We do get around.

The brigade membership is made up of town residents, which is slightly different to the Top End whose members are generally stake holders. The brigade enjoys a membership of about 12 active members. We currently have 1 x GFU, 1 x 4x4 large fire unit and a 2wd tanker of 5000 litres.

The fire circle in Central Australia is very different to the Top End; while the Top End experiences fire every year, in the centre we can have many years between major fire events.

The Alice Springs Brigade is kept busy throughout the year with community events, The Finke Desert Race, The Alice Springs Show, Speedway, Fete’s and community awareness.

Current office holders for 2009 are:

Captain:                Michael Quayle

Deputy Captain:     Petra Yan

Lieutenant:            Shawn O’Toole

Lieutenant:            Tim Phillips
