2011 Fred's Pass Rural Show

posted May 13, 2011 10:23 PM by Frank Dunstan   [ updated May 13, 2011 10:32 PM ]

Here are some photos taken at the annual Fred's Pass Rural Show. Unfortunately, Bushfires NT couldn't attend, so thanks to our friends at NTFRS for posing for a group photo.

Sorry fellas, I should have used the flash.

2010 Firies Xmas Do

posted Nov 20, 2010 5:25 AM by Frank Dunstan   [ updated Nov 20, 2010 7:15 PM ]

Bushfires NT put on their annual Christmas do at Berry Springs Reserve tonight, Saturday 20 November. Volunteers came from as far as Katherine to attend.

Presentations were made:

Kevin Natt Perpetual Trophy for best maintained vehicles went to Katherine Volunteer Bushfire Brigade.

Most Improved Brigade went jointly to Milne & Dundee VBB's.

Congratulations to those Brigades.

The reinstatement of formal awards seems to have replaced the old system of "awards" to firefighters for often dubious achievements. Somehow, they were a lot more fun and very much appreciated by the vollies. Perhaps next year???

2010 AFAC Conference

posted Sep 10, 2010 4:34 PM by Frank Dunstan

I've just finished a 3 day stint as a volunteer Red Shirt at the annual AFAC/Bushfires CRC Conference held at the Darwin Convention Centre.

Red Shirts (ushers/doormen/reception counter workers) came from BFNT, NTFRS and NTES staff and volunteers. BFNT volunteers were Ray Nicholls, Dianne Tynan, Charmaine Tynan and me, Frank Dunstan. It would have been good to have had more volunteers, especially in a quiet bushfire period brought about by the recent rains.

Red Shirts got to sit in on some very interesting lectures which made the long drive into town worthwhile. For me, the most fascinating lecture was Sofa Superstore - Rising from the Ashes of Tragedy, presented by Tim Sendelbach of the Nth Las Vegas Fire Department. This was a story about how not to do things and how the Charleston (SC) Fire Department lost 9 fire fighters. There is a fair bit of information about this fire on the internet, just Google "Sofa Superstore fire".

Tim was one of the post fire investigators and is a natural as a speaker. The lecture could have gone on for another hour and I don't think anyone would have minded if it had, but there were other activities to attend.

There was quite a large display area and I never realised that there was such a variety, or so many brands of fire fighting PPE on the market.

One interesting display was for a virtual reality disaster training system with a wide variety of scenarios. At present they have no bushfire scenarios, but due to the large number of requests they say they'll respond to potential customers requirements. Earlier in the year a scenario based Tactical Command course was held at Batchelor. Something like this with local scenarios would have been ideal for that course.

It will probably be another 9 years until AFAC returns to Darwin, but for volunteers still around then I heartily recommend that you put your hand up to attend as a Red Shirt.

2010 Freds Pass Rural Show

Bushfires NT set up their display at the Freds Pass Rural Show again this year. The location and layout was better than 2009, being immediately alongside our colleagues from NTFRS which allowed for a lot more interaction and sharing of resources. Here are some photos taken in the combined emergency services area and a couple in the First Aid Post.

Anzac Day 2010

posted Apr 24, 2010 9:16 PM by Frank Dunstan   [ updated Apr 25, 2010 2:58 AM ]

Bushfires NT staff and volunteers attended the Dawn Service at the Adelaide River War Cemetery and the march and service at Humpty Doo. They met up with some of their colleagues from NTFRS and St John Ambulance.

Anzac Day 2010

At Adelaide River I thought the choir from Taminmin High School singing an anti Anzac Day song a little strange. Some chalkie's idea, I suppose.

And the band played waltzing matilda:

Last verse:

Now every April I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me
I see my old comrades, how proudly they march
Renewing their dreams of past glories
I see the old men all tired, stiff and worn
Those weary old heroes of a forgotten war
And the young people ask "What are they marching for?"
And I ask myself the same question

Bushfires NT staff, contractors and local volunteers let their hair down with well deserved refreshments after another busy year.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!

Kevin Natt's farewell

posted Nov 6, 2009 8:54 PM by Frank Dunstan   [ updated Nov 10, 2009 5:18 AM ]

Saturday 7 November 2007

Kevin Natt's 30 years service with the Northern Territory Government - 24 of them with Bushfires Council, then with the rebranded Bushfires NT - was celebrated at the Berry Springs Recreation Reserve today.

Bushfires NT staff and volunteers came from as far as Katherine to pay their respects to "Big Kev", alias "Uncle", the "mechanic with attitude".

His Honour Mr Tom Pauling AO QC, Administrator of the Northern Territory presented Kev with the 30 year service award and the Bushfires Long and Meritorious Service Medal.

A major honour was the inauguration of the "Kevin Natt Perpetual Trophy for Best Maintained Volunteer Firefighting Appliance".

The new BART tanker has been named HEAVY KEVVY in his honour.

Kevin has retired from full time employment, but continues on as a volunteer with Training and as a newly signed on member of Livingstone Volunteer Bushfire Brigade.

We wish him a happy retirement and are glad that he will remain with us as a volunteer.
