Early wet season burning

posted Oct 19, 2010 3:47 AM by Frank Dunstan   [ updated Apr 27, 2011 7:39 PM ]
Residents in the Darwin rural area are advised that volunteer bushfire brigades and private land owners may be carrying out controlled burning operations over the next few weeks.

The main advantages of burning now are:
  • burning new green grass with the old reduces fuel loads for next year's bushfire season
  • it opens up the bush, making it easier for volunteers who undertake wet season spraying of mission and gamba grasses
  • the bush quickly recovers
  • conditions are now reasonably safe for burning
Motorists are asked to take care, slow down and turn your lights on where there is smoke over the road.
