Chief Fire Control Officer Steve Sutton announced at last night's Christmas do that the Volunteer Games would start up again in 2011.
I was told that a major reason for them lapsing after 2002 was because volunteer Brigades had lost interest and weren't sending teams. I guess then that it's up to the Brigades whether or not this will be successful.
Events like this involve the whole family and bring Brigades together in a bit of friendly rivalry.
More information will be posted as it becomes available. |

Rural land owners in the Top End should now be undertaking weed control measures on their properties.
Weeds of concern to volunteer bushfire brigades are mostly introduced pasture grasses gone feral, such as Gamba, Mission and Tully (humidicola).
Spraying with glyphosate is a very effective control measure, however you should be able to positively identify these pests so as to target them while leaving native grasses to recolonise the area. Just spraying everything because you don't know one grass from another does far more harm than good.
Native sorghum, or spear grass can be easily controlled by slashing, wet season burning or other measures to prevent it from seeding.
Bushfires NT and NRETAS Weeds Branch encourage members of the community to tackle noxious weeds, gamba grass in particular on their own properties and in crown lands and will provide assistance to anyone who undertakes this work.
Go to the Weeds Branch web page for details of assistance available to land owners in the Darwin rural and Coomalie areas.
People in these areas who wish to control weeds in crown lands should contact Bushfires NT Batchelor, or NTFRS if under their jurisdiction.

Residents in the Darwin rural area are advised that volunteer bushfire brigades and private land owners may be carrying out controlled burning operations over the next few weeks.
The main advantages of burning now are: - burning new green grass with the old reduces fuel loads for next year's bushfire season
- it opens up the bush, making it easier for volunteers who undertake wet season spraying of mission and gamba grasses
- the bush quickly recovers
- conditions are now reasonably safe for burning
Motorists are asked to take care, slow down and turn your lights on where there is smoke over the road. |

2011 is the 10th Anniversary of the United Nation's International Year of Volunteers in 2001. To celebrate the momentous event, Volunteering SA&NT is searching for photographs that best recognise the valuable contribution of volunteers in the community under the theme Volunteers are Vital. Winning photographs will feature in a 2011 Commemorative Calendar to be produced by Volunteering SA&NT and a selection of pictures will be exhibited in the Volunteering SA&NT foyer during National Volunteer Week 2011. Photographs submitted to the Volunteer Photographic Competition should celebrate the wonderful things volunteers do - to show the diversity of volunteers' roles in our community and how their actions and service supports those in need. The aim is to give people an idea of the diversity of volunteering, in the hope of encouraging more people to volunteer. COMPETITION CLOSES Friday 22 October 2010. Winners will be announced 28 October Click here for full details. |

Sent in by CFCO Steve Sutton We need ushers for the upcoming
AFAC/Bushfires CRC conference from 8 – 10 September 2010 (go to http://afac2010.org.au/ to check out the
conference)
The ushers at AFAC are commonly
called “red shirts” as, sensibly, they are all dressed in bright red shirts to
make identification easy. The duties of the red shirts are outlined in the
attached flyer. Depending on how many we get we might also request red shirts
to assist with marshalling of people onto buses for the conference dinner
etc.
The benefits of being a red shirt
are three:
a)
You get to help the smooth running
of your local conference (create good and/or lasting impression on
delegates)
b)
You get into the conference (you can
sit in on sessions you are rostered off and visit the
exhibition)
c)
You get a red
shirt.
We need a number of red shirts for
each of the three days of the conference as follows
Day 1 :
16
Day 2 :
24
Day 3 :
20
We intend to spread these numbers
between Bushfires NT, NTES and the NTFRS; so we need 5 – 7
“bushfires” red shirts per day.
If you are interested in being a red
shirt, or know someone who is, please contact Lorna on 8922
0844.
This offer extends to all BFNT
personnel and their families. Open the PDF attachment below for a list of Red Shirt duties. Volunteers are advised to have their flu shots - there will be a lot of delegates coming up from a southern winter. |
