Fuel Reduction Burning

posted May 11, 2011 12:09 AM by Frank Dunstan   [ updated May 11, 2011 2:53 PM ]
I believe that the cut off date for Permits to Burn in NTFRS Darwin areas falls this coming weekend, so residents in that area who wish to burn their blocks need to hurry up.

While there is no official cut off date in the Bushfires NT Northern Fire Protection Zone, rural residents should mind that they are unlikely to get a Permit after weather conditions make it unsafe for burning. This year is expected to bring more fire ban days than in the past and sooner than usual.

Before applying for a Permit to Burn you will need to have suitable firebreaks in place and sufficient resources to safely manage the proposed burn.

This season is predicted to be particularly bad for bushfires with extremely high fuel loads and very dry windy weather forecast. Land holders who manage fuel loads by burning will need to do so very soon before conditions become unsafe for burning. If your property is like mine and still too wet to put in fire breaks you may need to consider other methods of fuel reduction - like I do.

Contact Bushfires NT or your local volunteer bushfire brigade for advice and more information.
