Thursday 17 Feb 2011 Cyclone Carlos has been and gone, dumping a lot of water on the western Top End. As a downgraded tropical low it continues to drop a lot of rain to cause flooding in the Adelaide and Daly Rivers. Bushfires NT volunteers in the Darwin rural area are currently out in their fire units, clearing fallen trees from roads and carrying out survey and damage reports. Many roads are impassable or 4WD only due to flooding and washouts. Low lying areas are flooded and the Darwin River Dam is reported overflowing with a flood warning to downstream properties (which includes my own). Some residents along Darwin River are evacuating, although there is no official evacuation order. Darwin River Volunteer Bushfire Brigade members are very active with assisting residents - well done, Dave Mullavey and crew. Dave has promised some photos and a story of his adventures, which will be posted on this website next week when the rain lets up. Left: Local flooding along Old Bynoe Road Right: Around the corner to the right is the Darwin River on Old Bynoe Road. I couldn't get round the corner for a better shot because the road drops away steeply. I've lived out here almost 30 years and never seen it so high On Old Bynoe Road not far from the Darwin River - note the water bore making like a fountain. There must be a lot of pressure in the underground water table. A couple more shots of the Darwin River at Old Bynoe Road. This is not the river proper and is normally dry ground.
